TIme to admit the truth I think

Here’s where to discuss anything specific about your standard(ish) car or something that applies to the model in general.

TIme to admit the truth I think

Postby scribe » 03 Apr 2014 11:29

Hmm, I have to admit I'm a bit torn.

I bought my TR7 to take apart and rebuild, but circumstances have changed and I simply don't have the time to do it.

I figure it's best to admit that now and sell it whilst it's still in one piece, rather than when half of it resides in a number of boxes. It's not my daily driver and have no long tern storage available, so I'm thinking it should maybe go to a better home rather than rot on my driveway.

It still has an MOT, so I may try and spruce up the interior, put some tax on it and see what I get.

This isn't a request for advice I know, just venting my frustration/disappointment :(

Carry on :)

Cheers

Chris

Certainly understandable. But perhaps a step back for a few weeks or a month may shine a new light on the project.

If you're going to sell it, sell it running. The guy who owned Yellow TCT (second owner, first was his mother-in-law) was going to paint it, after four years he had the interior out, some of it sanded and primed then gave up on it, needing the garage space. It wouldn't start because of old fuel mucking up the carb bowls. Although it was rust free except for two areas and only had 30,000 miles on it he couldn't find a buyer and I eventually bought it for $100. You don't want to end up in that situation. Many's the project that's been abandoned by underestimating the job at hand, not understanding the journey is as much/more than the destination or just circumstances changing like no longer having garage space.

I'm in Oakworth near Keighley in West Yorkshire.

I'm quite eager to start on the project, but I know I just don't have the time to see it through and it will grind to a halt.

I'd rather sell a running and driving car, than a shell and a loads of bits.

I think like someone suggested above I'll think about it for a couple of weeks and then decide. I'm self employed so I may find myself between contracts with bags of time..... oh wait, then I wouldn't have any money coming in to pay for the restoration. Catch 22 :)

Cheers

I haven't decided if I am going to sell yet but.....

1982 DHC
MOT until June/July (I'd have to check the exact date)
Indicated mileage is 86,000 (give or take)
Runs and drives (although it hasn't been on the road over winter)
Immobiliser
New battery, plugs and leads.
Silver with blue interior (paint job isn't really top class)
Hood could fit better
Interior looks a little tired/a bit tatty, but I'll attempt to spruce that up at bit if I sell (I think it's possible).
Wipers have stopped working; could be a fuse or the switch - I have yet to check.
Fuel gauge doesn't work (I have yet to investigate why).

I also have a complete spare engine clutch and 5 speed gearbox assembly, plus a few boxes of spares, (some of which are probably junk - I'd let any buyer decide), that came with it when I bought it. I will chuck all that in for free if wanted.

The are no areas that look rotten to my eye. Previous owner said there was no rust. It has been undersealed and he said he'd been in all the nooks and crannies he could get to with Waxoly, but as I'm sure you know that with any car of this age you never really know how rusty it is until you take it apart.

*Update - Wouldn't start this weekend, but it seems to be fuel related (ordering a new pump as I couldn't open the current one to get at the filter).

There are a couple of pics I posted on another thread when I first got it, but I'll put more up if I do sell (I'll decide soon).
