Running, not running and back to running...

Here’s where to discuss anything specific about your standard(ish) car or something that applies to the model in general.

Running, not running and back to running...

Postby UKPhilTR7 » 17 Mar 2014 01:55

Yesterday, I was running my car whilst doing a few odds and sods on her. She was running all OK, so I took her for a little drive around the garages, to get the fluids moving, so to speak.

All was fine and it had only been about 5 min into the drive around on a cold stormy day (car was undercover and not wet). I turned the lights on, but they were a bit weak, so I turned them off again.

After a few more times up and down, the engine suddenly cut out and I had nothing, no lights on the dash, no starter motor trying to kick in when I turned the key, nothing, not even a sausage.

I pushed the car back to the garage and connected the charger to the battery, left it a few mins and then turned the key. The electric fan kicked in, but nothing else, no lights on the dash, no starter motor turning. So I turned her off and waited.

The fan coming on was strange as it was not on before the cut out and the car was not hot. I later checked all pipes and all were equally hot along with the rad too.

I left the battery charger on for a bit longer and then tried her again. I had to make sure in my own mind that she started and she did. No trouble. The temp guage only reached 1/4 way, so she was not overheating.

I think it could be 1 of a few things:

1. The battery is not getting enough charge and it is time to charge it.
2. The alternator is on its last legs and time to change.
3. The terminal connections of the battery need cleaning or possibly changing, then a tighten.

These do not answer why the fan came on the second time I tried to start her.

Make sure the wires going to the alternator and contacts are clean. One of the first trips I had taken with my car after the first winter set of projects was to a customer's memorial about 15 miles away. On the way back it stopped when I was braking for a stop light. The car was dead with only a solenoid click. At some point the torque of the motor moved the lower rad hose enough to pull off the main wire to the alternator. I don't know how long I was running on battery Repositioning and reconnecting the wire and a push start and all was well. Same if the wire was loose/corroded. Before assuming an alternator is bad, take it apart and clean the commutator with emery paper and make sure the brushes are good. No cost.

How old is the battery. A battery that has internal leakage (short)can drain a battery. My 8 year old battery was down to 4 volts when I measured last week and I found the water in the cells were down below plates. I filled it up, recharged and it seems to be holding a charge. I'll have to keep a closer eye on it from now on. I can't remember when I last checked it.

I would take off and clean the battery terminals even if they look clean just to be on the safe side.

You will always get a little heat build up when the engine is turned off because the pump is not running and no circulation, so I wouldn't worry about that.
Concentrate on the battery/charging problem. Sounds like typical bad connection or duff battery. The alternator should usually show the warning light to give a hint of trouble so check all the battery connections, including the earthing. If it won't hold charge you just might have to buy a new battery.
