RThrottle cable snapped advice Please?

Postby bonnietiler » 19 Aug 2015 08:47

Hello, had to collect my Son's TR7 last night throttle cable snapped at the pedal end.
Just asking any advice before I steam in, does the cable just push into the bulkhead?
Are there any cunning wheezes that I ought to be aware of.
Regards

Yes it is very simple, with an end that simply drops into a slot in the pedal fitting. It should be free to move in the fitting to prevent fatigue from bending, leading to it breaking.

Check out the other end too, as the fitting is supposed to be free & to rotate. When it doesn't the wire has to flex sharply at the end, which causes it to fatigue & break there too.

Note there should be a clip on the top of the throttle rod (in the car) to stop the ball coming out. Think my was replaced by a bit of tape but has not come off yet. I think the official routing (for UK cars) is through a curly clip attached somewhere on the turret around the brake balance unit (from memory) but my cable was too short to go that way so just hangs gracefully.

Only the late cars had the longer throttle cable that was routed via a metal loop attached to the turret top (well, UK cars at least, don't know about US Spec). Presumably that was to make the cable run to the throttle linkage straighter?

The replacement cables that you can buy all seem to be the earlier shorter type that simply curve round to the linkage from the bulkhead.

On a related note, I see Rimmers sells a longer cable (160cm) for LHD cars. Is that in fact suitable to use as a long cable on later RHD cars with the turret top routing?

I suggest you check why it broke as well. If the linkage in the carbs is worn it can make the cable appear very sticky and end up breaking the cable.

The problem is with the short throttle link Rimmers part no UKC6149 (http://www.rimmerbros.co.uk/Item--i-GRID006074) which is made of soft steel and ends up with grooves in the metal. These catch and the result is excessive strain on the cable so something breaks.

Buy a cycle cable from a good shop and you can select the required length and ends with adjusters for a few pounds.Search for sticky throttle on here and buyand fit the universal joint kit fitted and demonstrated by Beans and myself and then revel in the newfound driving joy.Steve..
