So I need to change the heater blower wiring

Postby MrT » 22 Mar 2009 15:58

...but I can't see where the 'business end' goes - do I need to remove the dash to carry out this seemingly simple swap?

Anyone know? Spinal arthritis means I've only felt for the cable run after removing the centre console and I haven't actually crawled underneath the dash for a look yet (my wife was out and I wouldn't be able to get back out again[8)]). I can't find the procedure set out in any of the books/manuals I've got...

Well, do you need to replace only the wiring or the blower motor?

The blower is on the low left side of the heater and the wiring runs above the heater under the dashboard. Maybe you can try to remove the center speaker grill, that is where the wires run underneath.

If you need to replace the blower motor then you need to disasemble the whole heater and this means dashboard removal.

It's just the short harness I need to replace, not the blower itself. It runs from the fan speed switch to, erm, somewhere else, and has a little coiled wire on a plate at the other end. This id changed through the top speaker hole in the dash then, and I don't need to take the dash out to change it?

Thanks for your help,

Dale

Hi Dale,
You mean the resistor for heater speeds, yes i am affraid dash will need to come out as what you seek sits on top the heater box. Dash removal nothing terrible though, screws and bolts, i drop the column down out of the way, some dont, which held up by sheer bolts (cut a slot in them with a dremmel and can be wound out with a screw driver [;)] ) May not be the best job with a bad back though.
Cheers John

Cheers John - it can wait a little while then - I don't need a heater at the moment!

Although it is a lot easier with the dash out the heater speed controller can be changed with the dash in.The radio console still needs to be removed though.

you could always just replace resistor pack through speaker hole cut and join the 3 wires, that go to speed selector switch saves taking dash out, making sure you make good solid joints. just an idea

if you factor in the earth's rotation, we are all speeding

Thanks for the pointers. It now seems to be working again on the first two speeds - I reckon I must have disturbed a dodgy connection somewhere...

Dale, I find the fan motor in thr ventilation system of my 7 stops
working, on all speeds, about once a year.

Although there is no sign of corosion, I have found removing its
fuse, & cleaning it, & the holder, with contact cleaner restores its
function.

The same goes for the fuses for other systems which are rarely used
on that car.
