KBA Update

Postby srrutter » 26 Apr 2008 01:08

Hey everyone,

Just thought I'd give you all an update to say I'm still around and fill on what's been happening with KBA...

Well to be honest not a lot over the winter, she got a bit of use when the weather was nice enough up to Christmas but there seemed to be something up with the tuning as she was getting awkward to start and wasn't running totally smoothly.

After xmas she stayed fairly undisturbed in the garage thanks to the wonderful British weather and it was probably late feb, early march that I tried to get her on the road again, without much success, the engine refused to start! I tried re-setting the carbs but it didn't help! I eventually worked out that there was a lack of a spark at the plugs... I then tried replacing the coil a couple of weeks ago, no success, so then tried the points... and had issues with setting the gap!

In the end she ended going back to Willow Triumph, Tim Willis picked her up, tried to get her started without any luck and realised that there was play in the inner workings of the distributor, something my lack of experience hadn't picked up on!

After the nightmare I had with the points I got him to put electronic ignition on there for me, and he's done a repair on the body of the distributor but there's still some play there. This means I'm going to need to get a replacement distributor at some point soon, at the moment it leads to the engine coughing from time to time, mainly under hard-ish acceleration, but once she settles down she cruises pretty well.

He also gave her a pre-MOT checkover, fixed a couple of other things and got the MOT done for me, which she has passed [:)]

So basically to cut a long story short, KBA's not done a lot over the winter months, but she's running again now (albeit not the smoothest until I get the distributor sorted). And now the weather's improving (touch wood, don't want to jinx it [:P]) so she should be getting some regular use, and hopefully will finally manage to get to some events!

Simon

Glad to hear KBA is about to hit the road after the Winter. I too am looking forward to getting Spider off the jack stands and on the road. I'm going to Canadian Tire tomorrow to get a polisher to cut the spray paint on the passenger door down. Rush to get it ready for the ABFM at Van Dusen Gardens on the 18th of May, first big show of the season (sent entry in yesterday).

With any luck this will be a busy car show and event season.

Well, I can only say enjoy KBA. Probably some of th ebad running is also due the car's idleness. Try a few longer trips to clean out th eengine a bit.

I also dug out my DHC after 186 days of hibernation [:I]
At first it ran a bit lumpish, but it ran. So I hit the road and after a couple of miles the engine started to run better. When I got home almost everything was back to normal. Only idle isn't as it should be but that is easily sorted once I have time to give th ecar it's annual service.

Its telling you in code that it has four cylinders missing. You know Ally would be well chuffed if it grew another four.

KBA succesfully made it down to Leeds yesterday to go to watch a meet at the Harewood Hillclimb which included a TR3A, TR6 and TR7v8 running in the TR Register hillclimb championship. (Some pictures can be seen here if anyone's interested).

I've successfully managed to swap in a replacement distributor but the advance isn't properly set yet so she's not running the best, but I've got a timing light ordered and will get things set up correctly when it arrives!

Did you order one with a dwell angle readout Simon? I find that feature invaluable on the Gunson Professional I purchased. Dwell and timing seem to be absolutely critical to my own car running correctly. Needs adjusting about every 1500 miles though to keep it tip-top!

Nice one on the pics Simon, was nice to see KBA blasting down the A1 at last!! She'll run a lot better once you get a timing ight on her and get that sorted.

See you again soon.
