TR7 Wont Start Help Please?

Postby bonnietiler » 22 May 2016 18:37

Hello, My Son's TR7, worked fine up until about 45 minutes ago..He parked it at the top of the drive turned the starter and Nothing not a peep..everything electrical works, with the ignition turned on. Not so much as an attempt from the starter.
Removed the Relays and replaced still nothing although I think I can hear a slight "click" when the starter is turned?
Battery is new tried pushing it in gear in case the motor has jammed and it starts beautifully from a push start no problem at all.
Any ideas?
Cheers

Just check, there should be a small single wire going to the starter also, this has a habit of the spade opening and falling off.

This would give this problem .
If it's not broke don't fix it.

Hi,
You should hear a very definate 'click' from the Blue relay. Try it with the dashboard box open.(can't remember correct name!)
If it doesn't click then I had this problem many years ago (as I'm sure many others have) and traced it to the electrical connector above the gearbox, there is a link wire there (autos would have a inhibitor switch) so it might need the contacts cleaning. Basically the 12volts goes from the ignition switch to the Blue relay through this link, I've cut the wires here and soldered them together to get rid of the problem.
Or I could be totally wrong and its just a bad earth!

Cheers,
Dave

Sounds like the starter relay, you can take the top off and pinch the contacts to test (I ran like that for the first couple of months), not the relay is not 'standard' and you need to get one from one of the specialists.
I also had something similar to above with the small wire to the starter motor solenoid. It looked OK externally but when removed I found the copper cores in the spade were green for about an inch and too corroded to make contact. When stripped back and a new spade fitted it was fine.
