Propshaft Identification

Postby moodyblue » 20 May 2015 13:19

One of my 1980 cars has the standard propshaft, but the other has this type. I'm sure I've seen it on other wedges, can anyone ID it? and should it have a gaiter?

Hi, I've fitted a modified SD1 propshaft to my 7V8 but like the original one, it has CV joints at both ends protected by boots / gaiters.

Are there sliding splines behind the the uncovered part of the prop-shaft or is it fixed? I'd be surprised if open splines didn't have a gaiter covering them.

I used a range rover classic prop on my tr7v8.
That uses hooke joints like the one in the pic.Had to drill 2 new holes in flanges to suit though.

It doesn't look modified in any way, could be a factory fit. It does slide and the splines are inside the unit.

I have a similar shaft to that in the 8, with 1100 series Hardy Spicer UJs. I was told it was shortened from some sort of V8 Landover.

It has the splines extending almost all the way to the UJ neck.

That is only on the authority of a local transmission specialist, but they recognised what the UJs were from 20 ft., so do have a few clews.

Hi,

Could be wrong but sure the gents at S & S Prep supplied shafts like that at one time or its been custom built by a specialist. A picture of my custom made shaft when I fitted the overdrive box to my FHC, along side a standard five speed shaft -

As you can see the sliding joint has no gaiter, my was made by a company local to me, Reco Prop who been making props for ever and if they deemed it didn't need a gaiter who am I to argue !

My car has a propshaft like that with U/J joints, but as with many older cars it,s provenance is unknown. Many cars I have had have been similarly equipped and none of them have had gaitors.Steve..

Thanks guys, all useful information, I'm going to fit it to my latest project. Looks like it's sealed so a gaiter is probably unnecessary. It was on one of the TR7 blog websites that I saw a picture of an identical shaft, but can't find the page at the moment.

I have one like that, I bought it many years ago from I think rimmers who at the time were selling them as genuine parts for very late cars. I am still using with the V8 with no problems (engine sits about 30mm further back).
