Contact points

Postby Dukmans » 04 Mar 2015 13:01

Some of you will advise me to go electrical and I probably will at some point.
But: I want to adjust the contact points the right way at least once.
One question that stays in my mind while fiddling around: does the flywheel go off?
It would make life a lot easier. With the airfilterhousing plus the bonnetlock off it still feels like a surgical job.
I did manage to change the contactpoints for a new one. Taping the screws to the screwdriver with some ducktape helped me a lot.
Without the flywheel I at least would see what I'm doing.
It feels like I can't get the contactpoints close enough through the slide to the axe for the spring to open. The feeler fits in between, but stays under tension.
Taking the whole thing out would mean timing the motor. I do have a stroboscope, but what I don't have yet is a running motor..
Thanks a lot for any advise!

Taking the whole thing out (and refitting it) is worse than fitting the points, the bolts are really difficult to get at!
Assuming you have the standard UK Delco distributor the top plate does not come off. Changing the points is a bit of a pig involving small fingers (have not found them yet), a long skinny screwdriver and a lot of fiddling. I use a small set of feelers to adjust, about 40-50mm long which can be got in at an angle under the plate. At least I used to, changed to Ignitor electronic about 2-3 years ago and have never had to adjust anything since. Points seem to need adjusting about every 1000 miles!
