Ah, I wondered what "ladybug" was. Obvious now : a VW beetle that's been spotted.

Why would anyone want to go from a TR to something as bloody awful as a VW beetle? [:0]

I had a VW Beetle that I was going to put an Aztec7 body on but moved and sold the car first. I wanted a TR7 back then too but before I knew it they stopped making them.

Yeah, I just don't get the VW enthusiast thing,
They're unspeakably hideously ugly, slow and uncomfortable.
They have diabolical handling and make that awful farty dak dak noise!
Absolutely no redeeming features that I can ascertain at all! [:D]

Careful there my dearest friend, you're prodding some one else's ox. I have very good memories of a yellow 1972 VW Bug. In fact, it served quite well as a business car for several years back in the mid 1980's. Of course, it wasn't raced and was treated to a severe maintenance schedule so it held up quite well. But, then it was sold for an econobox with air conditioning, which was sold before the payments were done.

I bought my '71 for $350 back in later '70's. Looked like new inside, looked like some took a shotgun to it on the outside. Pan wasn't rusted. Used it for work for a couple of years. I got per diem rates of a new Chevy Malibu so made some extra money. Traded it for a friend's F150 Ford truck to move out to the coast. The car was good in snow, going up a steep hill, there were cars all over the place that plowed in to the side snow banks trying to get up. I just motored on up with no problem. You got used to the noisy air cooled engine on the highway (it would top out at 84 mph). Only money I spent on it was a clutch and a distributor both cheap and both I put in myself. Other than that it was gas and oil only. The gas heater did use a lot of gas though which you had to use when it was -20 and you had to turn it off before the fan so you didn't burn out the heat plug, by which time it was cold inside again but when going, it would keep you warm when it was as cold as it could get this side of the arctic circle. You could drive it like you were racing it, as it was indestrucable.

My brother used to rebuild VW engines and he did one that would beat any muscle car on the streets. There was all kinds of racing parts for the as the engines were raced in Formula V.

Cop waved me over once on the way home from work at a traffic check and you could tell from the look on his face he knew from the condition of the outside he had one. Passed all the safety/light checks and you should have seen the look on his face as he waved me on. It was priceless.

The front wheels seem set back slightly in the wheel arch (maybe it's just the photo).

They appear that way because the steering is turned slightly to the left.
