I know the feeling. After driving almost 1,000 miles to get my car into Canada I parked it for the summer and winter to do front end, hoses etc. In the spring as I fired it up for the first time I backed it out of the garage and opened the hood to check for water leaks before taking it for a run. I noticed what looked like a spider web near hood latch and wiped it away but it wouldn't go. It was a pin hole in original fuel hose spraying out gas at 34 psi. I shut it down and replaced all fuel hoses (except for hoses by tnak/filter/pump as they where not original, am doing them this year as I drop the fuel tank to check it's interior condition.) Think what would have happened if I didn't do a water leak check with fuel spraying on the engine. Sometimes it's better to be lucky than rich.

That...is exactly why I do all my own work. Short of mounting/balancing tires on rims, I perform all other work myself. If I dont know how, I learn. If I mess it up/make it worse, I fix it. Not talking down to you in any way man, just adding my .02cents :) [:D]

ahh the glorious smell of fuel coming through into the car.......
in my case its because of a rusty tank and it comes out of the float chambers,.........but I picked up a new tank up from S&S yesterday
I might actually miss the smell.... no maybe not[;)]

at least it was only £20 you lost................and not that spider of yours[:D]
Glad your ok mind you never know where fuel could land when its from joint.
at least from an overflow chamber you can have the end pointed towards the floor

It rides again..... and again wehey!!!!!!!

Good you got home without incident.

Over here, if that happened and someone noticed, there would be 5 firetrucks summoned as well as a hazmat team and a rollback (car carrier) to haul the car away. All while the owner helplessly watches on and later gets billed for the whole project.

A mate of mine always reckoned that if you wanted to get old, you
had better get lucky. Looks like you have.

On the subjuct of hose failures, I hate it when you can no longer
trust a favoured brand.

I replaced all the fuel hoses on my 7, when I was restoring her. It
took a bit of searching to find some Gates hose, but worth it, I
thought, as there has been some dodgy petrol hose around. This
stuff had Gates printed in white along the hose.

Less than 2 years later, when I opened the shed door I was almost
knocked over by the smell of petrol. The hose on the supply side of
the fuel pump had split, & 20 litres or more had flooded the place.

I found all the hoses had radial cracks , many almost right through,
but the hose was still shiny, & the cracks only showed, when you
bent the bent the stuff quite tightly.

The left over hose, in the spares box was fine, so the problem was
caused by the petrol.

I don't know if the hose was counterfeit "Gates", or if Gates had
some cheep stuff made in you know where, but if you have used some,
check it out.
