Blinkin gone wrong again!

Postby nofinchance » 05 Dec 2009 09:43

Can you guys point me in the right direction to mend my pesky indicators? the hazzard switch works and they flash perfectley but will just illuminate and not blink right or left from the colomb stalk.I have cleaned the contacts at the stalk and the front and rear. The right one started to go slow first and then just light and stay lit now it's both sides[V]

I had the same problem, and when I took it to Robsport they fitted a new flasher unit. This lasted about 2 months. Next time they fitted and electronic one and that has been fine since. Give them a call.

As Alan said go into Halfords and get an electronic flasher unit

all you do is connect your two wires from your old flasher unit

(found just under the the wheel )

then add an earth to it

and you will have no more problems

Thanx guys.I will be off to my local halfrauds tommorow on a parts finding mission.I was wanting to go in to a branch as I see they have a 50% off sat nav sale on.I need a new one as mine is OK but only takes in the first part of a post code say wr9 0 when the whole thing is wr9 0ba.This makes it a bit vauge sometimes and more and more it is getting no hits from it's database leaving me to call the office to get someone to look on google maps for me[:o)].Back to this flasher unit thing when you say under the wheel is that the steering wheel? I have looked in the haynes manual and no mention of the flasher unit is made except for the wiring diagram and that does not say where it is[:0]

But it is in the same place

Edit:

If I were you I'd get an electronic flasher relay for LED bulbs .
Why you ask?
[:D] Because then you're fit for the next step in improvement:

Changing out those old incandescent bulbs for modern multi-LED 'bulbs. And
that relay will work just as good (if of any decent quality construction!) with your old bulbs
while you save up the dosh for the LED bulbs. (or wait for the white bearded fellow to arrive)

www.VirtualVillage.co.uk sell great LED bulbs for our dear Wedges
- and personally I think they are much better compared to the ageing incandescent bulbs;
I used:
2 Amber 45-LED BA15S 1156 Flash Indicator Light Bulbs for the front and
2 Amber 57-LED BA15S 1156 Flash Indicator Light Bulbs for the rears...and then...ditched the amber inner lenses F & R...

(PS
I used 2 White 63-LED BA15S 1156 Car Bulbs for the reverse light positions and
4 Red 57-LED BA15D 1157 Car Bulbs for the rear position and brake light units. But do remember here:
I use the double filament bulb holders from Tex Automotive in the red positions!)

Oh, and if you have a choice, choose a flasher unit with TWO connectors. That's all you need, and the 3rd connector could create confuion when attempting to plug in your 2 wires...

Remember, there are two flasher units in the cars. One for the Hazards and one for the turn indicators. Hazard flasher is under the glove box while the indicator flasher is under the steering wheel close to the wing wall.

Job done[:D] I got the same unit as in the picture a halfords 203.I found the old flasher unit just where you guys said it would be and after breaking the old wires out of thier old right angle connector block I plugged in earthed the spare new terminal(designated earth) and held my breath. The worst that could happen is BANG [B)].Works fine got a nice loud tick to it as well.Flashes realey quick like a modern car not with a 30+ second delay between flashes[:0].Thanks all for your advice now my 'coloumbo' bit.Just one more thing[:p]...While I was looking for the old flasher unit I saw a similer looking and size silver box with four connections to it just under the steering wheel to the right. What does that controll then[?]

Did it have two black locking connectors and two clear looking one?

I believe that is the Delay device for the low fuel warning light. It is usually connected at the top of the instrument pod on the right side.
