sounding rough suddenly

Postby davesopener » 17 Aug 2009 20:20

just back from a drive
and car started sounding rough
juddering at 30-50 mph intermitently
like its being starved of fuel a little
only thing different recently was just put normal unleaded fuel in
sounded rough for few minutes when idling after run as well
then ok
this happened to me ages ago and changed fuel pump which resolved it

Do you have a fuel filter fitted? Is it clogged?
When you filled up, how low was the tank before? You might have stirred up some gunk from the bottom of the tank.

Sorry if that sounds a bit patronising, but always best to start with the basics I think. [:)]

Check the filter (if fitted) for water and muck. If you do not have one fit one in the rubber pipe between the metal fuel line and the pump. When I had rough running I disconnected the rubber pipe from the metal one and drained off a load of water and muck. You need to drain the tank to get as much as possible out. Try a search on these things.

Learn your fuel station and watch for when the fuel truck is there. When they fill the storage tanks, it mixes condensation water up with the gas. If you fill up while they are filling the storage tanks or right after, you can get a whole load of water and slit in your delivery.

If I think I have fuel starvation, I take the car somewhere where I
can go moderately quickly.

I let the thing idle for a while, to make sure the carb float
chamber has had time to fill, then do a a flat out standing start,
revving to 5000, or more in each gear. The thing will run out of go,
before 4500 in 4Th.

Of course, flooding in one carb will give very similar symptoms.
Pull the airfilter off & have a look for petrol in the carb throat.

If it handles this OK, & isn't flooding, I look for ignition
problems with one pot, plug, lead distributer etc, or closed valve
clearance on one pot.
