I second that. Don't make the mistake i made and spend a fortune on the 2.0 litre lumps when deep down you wanted a V8 all along ;-)

I don't want fast cars anymore, I've had them in the past, just like I don't want a fast bike, yes I'd love a 1000cc sports bike but I'd either loose my driving license or kill myself so I won't get one. I had a BMW in the past and it was a blast to drive and yes it would do it's top speed

I have as much fun bumbling around at legal-ish speeds on slower bikes and hopefully live to old age, and the same applies to cars so I am going to get a TR7, which is a car I've loved the look of as long as I can remember.

Boy, have you hit the nail on the head, as someone once said, "it's more fun making a slow car go fast". Speaking of bikes, back in '68 I bought a Triumph Trophy off the show room floor and would like another one stock like what I had but they are as scarce as hen's teeth. Everybody went for the Bonneville with it's twin carbs ($75 more) but I liked the blue colour rather than the Bonneville's red. In first half of '68 it was the same bike, didn't have to balance carbs and you could only tell the difference at top end. Talking to an old biker the other day and he said they were the best handling bike and kept going back to them. Despite the front wheel wobble if you didn't have the damper knob tight enough, they were the best looking bike and Steve McQueen drove then too. :P

back in 2012 i got myself the then new ZZR1400, my old ZRX1200 not being quick enough. Big mistake, it was virtually impossible to 'give it the beans' without breaking the law. To put it in perspective, it would do 95mph in first gear. The powerband was off limits within legal speeds so you'd just accept it was fast but never actually exploit its power. After a few months i wanted my old ZRX back. My 330d (which i sold for a van) was knocking on the door of 300bhp, incredibly quick but it only came alive at illegal speeds, another capable machine lost on the roads. My slowly progressing TR7 is geared for about 130mph so should feel completely alive at legal speeds :-)

Disclaimer - People (including myself) tend to suffer from self-confirmation bias!

It's hard to compare engines because each person's experience base is different, and there are so many tune/customisation choices. Few I think would have had the benefit of test driving a 7, Sprint and an 8 straight out of the factory. And I venture that few people who are doing an engine rebuild or transplant duplicate the factory specs in any event.

In my case, I bought a generally well looked after but tired stock 7 with a worn bottom end that also got the stage where it needed to have the head off for some work too. I chose that particular car for the excellent condition of the body, trim and underside, because I figured that it was going to be easier for me personally to manage the restoration of mechanicals and electrics than bodywork. Others here may have made different choices based on their skills etc.

I converted it to a Sprint, partly because I happened to be offered a fully reconditioned sprint head from a reputable machine shop (with re-profiled and nitrided crank thrown in) for a very small amount of cash. My motor doesn't have any amazing enhancements to it, but it was a total rebuild using quality components.

The experience base for the comparison for me then is between a worn 8valve and an essentially "new" sprint motor.

The latter goes better and feels that it has MORE torque at the bottom end, which is probably the result of the comparative "age" and wear of the two builds (maybe helped along a little by having bored it out somewhat). Although it does have a noticeable power band that kicks in particularly from around 3200 revs, I wouldn't describe it as "peaky" or as coming at the expense of the low end pulling power I was used to.

Maybe it did cost me more doing this than rebuilding an 8valve from the ground up, but I'l probably never know what the real world difference is in price or performance.

The power band on my V8 feels like it kicks in just above idle. :D but it's a very useable power band and is as docile or nutter as you want to make it. By comparison I had a Corolla T Sport for several years. It was similar to a Vtec engine. The power lift started at 6,200 and the rev limiter kicked in at 8,200. It hardly got used on the road since it became illegal to use past 2nd gear.

On the fuel consumption I have both the 4.6L 8, & the 7, & a Honda S2000 for comparison. I have done the trip from Queensland to Sydney/Bathurst twice in each Triumph & once in the Honda, on a lightly trafficked inland highway, cruising at about the 100Km/H speed limit.

The 7 usually gives low 7L/100Km or high 6L/100Km. The Honda just under 9L/100Km. The 8 was running lean at small throttle openings on one trip. This meant more throttle required & used 14L/100Km. Last time with it more highly but properly tuned it used only 10.1L/100Km over 2900 kilometres.

On rev ranges, I have raced a Rover V8, [a Repco F1 version as used by Brabham] redlined at 9700, & the Honda S2000, red lined at 9000, which I use in 3Rd for overtaking. I rarely rev the 8 past 5000, it just doesn't need it, with huge torque available in the next gear, & find it slower if I rev past 4000 in the 7.

I find each equally enjoyable, just in slightly different ways.
