Since it's not an engine related thing:
Yes, it's the same root cause, and the same remedy for a TR8.

Changing out the stone age flasher relays for modern three wire electronic ones is a standard issue
that [if it hasn't been done by some PO already] should be the first thing one do to the new bought
Wedge. Before filling the tank even, imho...

I am really glad it helped, it's such an easy upgrade that, once I'd done it, I felt compelled to let others know. A complete article was published in TRAction and if anyone wants a copy of the Word document, please let me know and I will pm it to you.

Don't forget, the same solution can be used on the hazard circuit as well.

For those of you fitting multi-LED 'bulbs' to your direction indicators - you'll find that the blink rate goes bezerk
even if you've fitted the modern electronic relays discussed above. This is due to the very low load (amperage)
the LED-bulbs have, and then the relay acts as if you have a burned out bulb in the circuit... [:(!]

After looking for (what feels like ages!) electronic direction indicator relays that don't give a damn what they're
loaded down with I've finally found a source for these hens teeth. OK, they are 'for off road use only', they are 'rather'
expensive, the do not emit a clicking sound and they can be loaded with 40W at '12V' only, but all of that is peanuts
- since they happily operate both LED-bulbs and/or incandescent bulbs at a nice steady rate! [:D]

Strangerover, I don't think they are available form Halfrauds, not my local ones anyway. I got mine from www.vehicle-wiring-products.co.uk (which I think Gary recommended in an earlier post).

Hi Alan,
Halfords had one left! Apparently they are not giving them shelf space any more due to lack of sales, it was behind the counter. It cost about a tenner, and took me ten minutes to do the job. I thought the flasher relay would be behind the glovebox, but found it hanging [:0] next to the choke control. The most difficult part was finding a suitable earth, hardly rocket science. Thanks for all the advise. Now my flashers work well even with my foot on the brake. I will also do the same for my 1971 Range Rover which seems to exhibit the same problem!

Strangerover...Good screen name!

I recall about 20 years ago there was an article in Cars and Car Conversions Magazine about a rally TR7 called "Strangerover".
This came about as it used a TR7 bodyshell on a Range Rover chassis with a mid mounted Rover V8. It had 6 or so very large driving lights mounted on the front. It still had the pop up headlamp assemblies, but with air horns mounted in them the horns would sound when they popped up!
Apparently it was a pretty fearsome thing. You could hear it coming for miles.
Unfortunately I no longer have the article.

Gary,

You mentioned "Side Repeaters" in your article. Over a year ago, someone posted a relay system set-up to make the side lights blink with the turn indicators. Was that you or someone else? I have searched for the article, but with no luck.

<font color="red"><b>Oh, if someone knows how to hook a buzzer up to the blinkers, I would really like to know about it! I can't hear them when I am driving down the road and I have driven miles down the road with them on. For some reason, the US instrument panels have all the indicators blacked out and they can be read in sunlight conditions.</b></font id="red">

Re Strange Rover: Yes I sell vintage car magazines for a living on eBay, congratulations your memory certainly serves you very well. There were actually two articles, one with good pictures and brief text, the other with more technical text but less pictures I believe. It was raced by one Alvin Smith who had rolled his rally Range Rover and mounted a somewhat modified TR7 body on to the 100 inch chassis, and yes with a mid mounted engine, and chain driven gearbox, as the engine was now facing the other way!
I have a slow feasability project continuing on the farm, a TR7 convertible is mounted on a RR chassis, but it is far from running as yet! I have to finish my six-wheel Discovery conversion first, it needs final trimming inside.

Hi Jclay

No it wasnt me, my reference was to the side marker lights. Mine are simply wired into the existing front indicator wires and flash accordingly. Whilst the RFL3 says it supports 4 x 21w bulbs, I find that there is no degradation in operation with the added side marker lights as well.

Yes if anybody knows where to get a indicator buzzer I would be grateful too. On a bright day in the convertible its very hard to see the warning lamp on the dash! I had one on a motorcycle in the 1980s, perhaps that is where to start looking?
