replacing rear wheel bearing

Here’s where to discuss anything specific about your standard(ish) car or something that applies to the model in general.

Sadly there are still TR7 owners who look at price rather than quality when buying parts :?

My timken bearings turned up yesterday without the collars, i didn't ask for them apparently! I thought they came as a kit. Anyway, 2 x bearings came to £86 inc VAT and delivery. Ouch. As John says, it's not something i want to do again and now contemplating changing the diff carrier bearings for Timken too. I've got loctite bearing retaining compound in the shed, no idea what the number is though. I'll use it anyway as i know it works :-) As an aside, i have a Dec 79 FHC and do not have any circlips on the half shafts either. Any idea why they were fitted? I also have a 1982 FHC with a back axle, would it be prudent to use the half shafts out of that?

Cheers,

Rob.

The collars can fail (they are "only" a press fit).
And when that happens the circlip is there to keep it in place.
And as such it prevents you from loosing the halfshaft

When i stripped mine down i remember thinking "surely this isn't the only thing keeping my wheels from falling off!" My hydraulic press doen't have a gauge so i'll never know what tonnage i'm using, i might take it to the garage and get them to do it.
