engine restraint cable

Postby laskaboots » 16 Mar 2009 17:24

I pulled the engine out of my 77 TR7 last year for a rebuild, and a repaint. I took pictures of EVERYTHING.....except where the engine restraint cable attatches to the bellhousing. Now that the engine is back in, it looks like there are two (or more) places that it could go back in. Very difficult to get a photo under the car, and thought FOR SURE I would find a picture in one of my manuals. I was wrong. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Also replaced the clutch for the fan with an electric fan. VERY tight fit and it seems if the engine moves very much, the crankshaft pulley will rub on the fan motor. Anybody else done this? thanks much!

I mounted my electric fan to the front of the radiator. It functions in push mode as well as pull mode.

Have you got room in front of the radiator and will your fan run in push mode if you reverse the current to it?

well, the AC fans are up in front, but that is a good suggestion that I didn't think of. Yes, the fan can be run in either direction, and maybe it would be a more convenient fit if it becomes a problem where it is now.

That cable functions only to hold back the engine & gearbox in the event of a major front end collision. If you're sure you want it back on, stick the backend of the cable in the hole in the rear cross member and you'll see a corresponding hole in the bottom left side of the bell housing. That is, if you haven't put a bolt in it already.

Are you sure you can't fudge a little more clearance if you think it's too close?

Check the photo below. Right under the sharpie it says tension cable and has a line drawn to the appropriate hole, just under the starter bolts.

I guess you can run any fan in either direction by reversing the polarity, but just make sure that the blades aren't curved if you're planning to do this as you'll lose some airflow.

thank you jclay, that picture/diagram is just what I need, and also for the ground cable, etc. I might have lucked out and put it in the correct hole by chance. I think it IS necessary to keep the engine from rotating slightly when accelorating/decelorating. I had to saw off the front of the pulley where the old clutch/fanblade was attatched in order to get enough clearence for the electric fan motor. Seemed drastic, but I'm afraid of ever again using those fan clutches after both I, and a friend had them seize-up and throw pieces of the fan blade into the radiator of our Spitfires.

I was wondering why you had clearance problems for the electric fan.

Did you know that you can unbolt that pulley along with its mounting plate (looks a bit like a conventional water pump but it isn`t)from the front of the engine block? It`s about 3 or 4 bolts - all it does is hold the fan and pulley in place. Without the fan, just unbolt the entire thing and chuck it. No more clearance problems.
