Handbrake cable length

Does anyone know the correct length for a 5 speed handbrake cable. The reason I ask is that my new cable appears to be too long. When fitted with the brakes correctly adjusted the cable has to be done all the way up, and still has slack? [:D][8]

Not sure of the lenght but sure you havnt been given a SD1 cable, look the same but llllllllloooooooonnnnnnnnggggggggggeerrrrrrrr!!
