Fitting the boot

Postby macmattom » 19 Jan 2009 21:55

I have just tried to refit my boot, and suprise, suprise, [:0][:0], it is proving more tricky than I thought tightening up four bolts would be.

The boot came from a different car and has been resprayed at the same time as the car. There are basically 2 problems:

1) It does not fit perfectly into the hole but it is quite close - the gap around the boot when closed is very narrow near the back end where the profile drops over to the rear lights panel(probably no more than 3 mm either side, maybe 2 mm), but a more healthy 5 mm near to and along the rear deck. I think I can live with that, but will do a few tweaks to try to get it more "uniform". More worrying is -

2) In order to make the boot catch mechanism lock and secure the boot lid down, the lid must be slammed quite firmly. The problem here is that this has the effect of pulling the lid down too tightly on the seal and thus causes the top of the boot to be below the line of the rear wing and it also ruins the join between where the boot corner meets the recess shape for the rear light clusters.

I have pulled the boot catch plate as high in its recess as I can and seem to have no more adjustment. Do any of you guys have any ideas - all greatfully appreciated.

Thanks,

Mac

hmmmmm, I've got no problem with used parts, but guess you just found out the hard way, as to why you should allways "fit" used parts to a car before painting them........

Is it possible to get any adjustment at all from the top part of the latch? Haven't looked at the mechanism lately, but could you put a washer between the upper latch and the place where it bolts to the lid?

I know how you feel Mac. Our project TR7 came with a different boot lid and it sits just a wee bit proud of the rear vertical bodywork but cannot go back any further or the boot's rear edge will hit the back deck. Fortunately ours does latch easily.

Have you fitted a new boot seal, if so they are thicker than the originals and make it harder to close the boot. Fit an old one to get the gaps right and then fit the new one.
