5-stud wheels from SD1?

Postby strangerover » 05 Apr 2008 11:36

Hi all,
Were all the factory TR8 cars fitted with four stud or five stud wheels? I have a TR7 (fitted with a Rover V8 back in the 1980s) and it seems to have SD1 alloy wheels, with five studs. I just wondered how common this was?[?], and perhaps which parts the conversion guys fitted in the 1980s. It has the proper subframe and some sort of certificate with it when I bought the car a year ago, but I have not really had a chance to use it yet and intend doing so this spring. The tyres are 195/60/R14.
Thanks in advance,
Trevor

Hey, Trevor!

Welcome to the Forum!

Some people have converted to the SD1 lower strut assembly to get the larger spindle and the 5 bolt hubs. Now, if you car is an 82, who knows, maybe BL went deeper into the parts bins and used the SD1 struts, but I have never heard of that happening and doubt it.

Also, you have 14" rims. TR7's all came with 13"s.

Have fun, drive fast & safe, be kewl,

Hi Trev, all factory TR7/8,s came with 4 stud hubs and 13" wheels as
jclay correctly said. You may of heard of Mark Grinnall who tuned and
modded wedges in the eighties. Not only did he convert cars to Rover
v8,he also used other parts from the SD1.Many Grinnall's had tr axles
adapted to use SD1 5 stud hubs, and i think with a bit of welding an
SD1 axle can be fitted which gives a wider track. Is yours a Grinnall?

Interesting to hear about your car, Trevor. As Paul & Jclay say, no factory cars used 5 stud hubs or wheels, & Mark Grinnall was well known for his TR7 V8 conversions using Rover SD1 struts, hubs & axle parts.

Has your car got any bodywork mods? This was another mark of the Grinnall range, with modified arches, sills & spoilers (or any combination thereof!). Paul's picture shows the arches & sill extentions clearly. You could also have the car painted any colour you liked.

Does the car have power steering?

Of course, just because the car has Rover SD1 parts does not neccesarily mean it was converted by Grinnall, but it would be interesting to know more.

Hi Guys,
Thanks for the quick responses![:)] Here are some answers to your points:
jclay - Yes its a very late one, Y reg, this could be the case perhaps. Thanks for the welcome.
Paul W - Well I am not sure. It certainly has no documentation to support this, although it came with a fair bit. I think it was converted in about 1988 looking at the old MoTs, etc. The bodywork looks completely standard to me. It is metallic gold by the way. The track looks normal, but you guys could spot if its modded a mile off I guess, so I'll find a picture and post it on shortly.
Hi TR Tony, as before it looks standard to me, but then I am no expert (at least not in TR7s, only Range Rovers!). It does not have power steering.
The reg is POP30Y if anybody recognises that, I got it from RTS auctions in Norwich last spring, impressed with the very clean condition and the fact that this little gem had my favourite engine in it!! Plus it'll be cheaper to run than a RR...
Regards,
Trevor
