Re-drill the mounting lugs on princess Calipers?

I have seen some Princess Calipers on Ebay claiming they have been welded and re drilled to fit a TR7.

Have any of you heard of this before? I thought they were a direct bolt on caliper.

One comment I have seen is where they claim to have done this to clear the alloys.

They are a direct bolt on caliper, but they are/were redrilled to fit inside the 13" alloy wheels.
Remember the car they originate from had 14"wheels [;)]

That's not entirely accurate, the calipers have to be redrilled to move the calipers further onto the disc.When using the calipers mounted on their original holes with a TR8 disc you will find that the pad will overhang the edge of the disc, therefore the caliper needs moving closer to the centre of the disc which will in turn bring the pads to sit in the correct place.

I had been watching these for my TR8.

How much work is really involved getting these to work with my car. The write up makes it sound like you just unbolt the old and replace with the new. Is it really that simple.

Even though the TR8 had "upgraded" brakes, they are still sub standard in my opinion.

Hello RJS

These offer more grip or pad surface area as they are a 4 pot caliper instead of the standard two pot ones.

The bolt pattern is the same as the TR7 so they bolt straight on. It appears that they overhang the rotor a bit so disc pad at that point does not wear and eventually these lips on each pad overhang the dic itself and rub together in the middle. This would reduce braking significantly, so you had better have them re drilled. This is why the ones on Ebay are so attractive.

One other difference is that the Princess Caliper has two inlet hoses and we only need one. You can see a little splitter in the photo's on the auction.

Bigger calipers do not reduce brake fade due to heat and do not increase stopping power due to leverage. Leverage would mean a larger diameter disc(Rotor)

If you really want to improve things go for a Vented disc option with one of the suppliers in the US. They combine a new caliper with a diffreent, modern rotor and that makes a huge difference.

I have seen the wilwood brakes on woody's site, and I might go that far someday, but if I could step up from what I have now for a tenth of the price it might make sense.
