Reviving Door Handles

Postby FI Spyder » 14 Aug 2009 04:41

Earlier Mildred posted how to replace your loose knobs on your door handles with new generic knobs. If you want to be more of a Scotsman (compliment) you can repair them. First you warm the soft plastic of the knob with a hair dryer (heat gun too harsh). Then pry out the siver disc with two small screw drivers.

Now is a good time to lube them, I used some graphite. Then put a suitable sized socket under the backside of the handle and with a punch (I used both pointed and flat) hammer the rivet till there is little to no play in knob like this:

Then warm the knob with hair dryer again and press in the silver disc and it will snap back in:

If you were pretty careful the marks will be minimal and no worse than any 30 year old handle. I don't know how long they will last but should last as long as originals. Cost = $0.00.

Our window winder handles were also fitted to the classic shape pre-BMW minis. Mini bits were always cheaper at dismantlers or breakers in the past. This might be changing as they're going the way of 7's - There's far fewer on the roads these days.

As an aside, has anyone heard from Mildred lately? Haven't seen her around the forum. [:(]--Monica

She probably saw the video of me thrashing my LT77 5spd and is sitting with a cold towel on her forehead![:D]

Seriously, hope all is well with her.
