Checking shock absorbers?

Postby Dave Dyer » 19 Jul 2009 14:40

Hi All,

Can anyone tell me how to visually check a front shock absorber (while its removed from the car) i.e. if its pressed in and out several times, should there be a slight film of oil appear on the chrome piston rod bit ? This is what I'm getting and its meant to be a new shocker.

Thanks, Dave

Dave,

Slight film of oil is ok and is the chrome finish in good condition e.g. no pitting along length of shaft.

If the shock was on a car the car it should only bounce for 1 and half, if more the shocker is on its way out.

Hope this helps

Jim

Hi Jim,

No, the shocker hasn't been fitted, also there is no pitting on the shaft. But when I wipe the film of oil off and press it up and down (at a steady rate, not hard) there is a film of oil on the shaft again.
I'm wondering, is this normal or is the shocker at fault.

Thanks, Dave

Dave,

I would say its normal, the shocker is filled with hydrohaulic oil so when its pushed in and then released so leaves asmall amount on the shaft. You could check the seals are still in good oreder e.g. perfectly formed onto the shaft if you want.

Jim
