Opinions wanted on 17" wheels

Anyone running 17" wheels and tires your opinion would be appreciated on the ride and offset that you have used. Questions I have are
Are you using wheel adapters?
If yes how thick are they?
What width of wheel are you running?
What offset did you choose?
Any clearence problems with What you have?
What tire size did you chose?

I am looking at 17x7 +40mm offset with wheel adapters that are 19mm thick. I thinck if my math is all OK it should set the wheel's outer edge out about 1cm more than stock. I also plan on using 205/40 17's as a tir size. I don't think this should be a problem but would like any comments. If you have any pictures of 17" wheels on your car that would be great also.

Hi Mark.
Ran 17 inch's on mine last year, didnt need to run spacers for wheel arch clearance but because the wheel hob rubbed on my SD1 based disc kit (Rimmer Bros kit [V])
The actual wheels were Avez Type A and came of an MGF and cost me NOTHING [:D] as were going spare where i worked an MGF Tech. They are 17 by 7 1/2 J and have 205/40 tyres fitted. The rear ones would just catch the arch if a very large bump was hit. Not sure of the offset can have a look or measure them at some point, they are sitting in the garage at the moment. Personaly gave a very stiff ride, must be getting old!!

Went back to 14 inch revolution now, personal thing just prefer the look!

Car looks great even with extra large wheels but not a fan of rubber bands on alloys. They should stay with jelly bean rice burner pimpmobiles.

And those Revolutions certainly look much better imho.
Still think 15" is largest you should go on a TR7 [:I]

Them modern wheels really demand the modern colours on a body kit to compliment them on our cars & I doubt whether there is a better example than Scottish's car. If I owned that car I'd have to upgrade my garage & have it lined in Italian marble.

It depends what you want to use your car for. Don't forget that the
tyre bag with a 13" wheel was designed to be part of the total
suspension system, of our cars.

My 7, with 13" wheels & tyres, is much nicer road car, & daily
driver than the 8 with its 15".

The 15s, with better tyres available in that size, has more grip, &
higher cornering speeds.

Take your pick, to suit your usage.

Limited use definatly not every day. Prety good roads around where I am. Lets face it if I need to go on a long drive I can always through the 13" Cosmic's on in a few minutes and be gone. I like the contrast of old verses new.

Great wheels, on a lovely car Scotty.

That sounds good Bender, I wish I could do the same.

However, with the 8, I can no longer fit 13s over the brakes, front
or rear.

Good point about doing it out of nessesity as far as brakes go But for me it's just a looks thing.. Realy I don't even care that much about the added grip because I don't realy ever push this car that hard. Honestly when ever I used to want to go out and draw some tire screaching road art the SD1 with it's modded 4L and big brakes was a blast. It will live again...well it's heart and soul anyway. TR7 V8 is all I have to say about that, yes it's been in the works for a while and will likely be for some time to come but eventualy it will be disturbing the neiborhood once again. I guess then I will have to consider wheels out of nessesity like you rather than just fancy.

John, Those 17" wheels looked awesome on your car at Harpenden last year. You're right about 60 profile tyres on 14" wheels. They fill the standard arches about right, I just hope that 14" tyres are freely available when its time to replace them and I'm not stuck with Hokey Cokey 2000 widow makers. Then again there should be plenty of 15" MGF wheel and tyre combos up for sale......

I also like the look of my 14s. Unfortunately, tire selection is sparse. So far I'm satisfied with the Yokahama ES100s. Who knows if they will still be available when this set wears. If I had the funds, I'd get a set of 15" Superlights with HP street tires and get some race rubber to put on the 14s for track use. Oh well, nice to dream. [:D]

Hi Adam,
Just got a new set of 195/60 14 Yokohamas for Â£160 for all 4 [:D] so hopefully right foot allowing will last a little while. The circuference is about the same between the 17 and 14's just always liked Revolution wheels!
