Top Gear, Richard Hammond = Tom Cruise?

Postby omichaelshar » 16 Jan 2008 09:28

Not often attracted to watching TV at present, but Top Gear is still a siren is sometimes a beacon...

Just saw bits of Richard Hammond's special on Evil Knievel and thought this is is boring as Tom Cruise....

Perhaps I am unbalanced

We don't get this show in the U.S. but I wish we did. I usually enjoy it, even though they were pretty hard on the TR7!

We get loads of crappy shows about trucks. [:p]

Kevin,

Top Gear is available to us from both Direct TV and Dish Network on BBC America. But even when I had Comcast cable, I used to watch it, though I am not sure what channel it was on. You might want to look around [;)]

I find that Hammond can be quite annoying at times, but overall, I find the show very entertaining! Their drive from Florida to LA was absolutely hilarious!

I download Top Gear to my pc and watch every show. Here is a link to site where you can download it.
http://www.finalgear.com/

If you have dialup internet don't even think about it. Each show is 700mb (the viewing quality is very good). It takes about 3 hours to download a show to my computer.

You will need to have a program like uTorrent (free - you can get from the screen where the downloads are), and you might need to download DivX (again free – google it to find it) so windows media player can play it.

All the American car shows are afraid to say anything bad about a car because they need the car companies as sponsors. Top gear is brutally honest and could care less what a manufacturer thinks. They do tend to make fun of Americans and American cars (and Germans and French and Australians and etc…). It is an entertainment show that happens to talk about cars – it is not like any “car showâ€￾ you have ever seen.

TG has been through several incarnations over the years it has been on TV here in the UK.

It has metamorphasised from a fairly conventional car review show into a rather laddish politically incorrect show where 3 blokes indulge themselves with fast cars & outrageous stunts while pursuing that very British trait of taking the mickey out of foreigners as well as each other!

It's innovative, fun, sometimes rude, sometimes cruel, a bit risky, very popular but very rarely boring (the recent "specials" that Owen mentions were not as good as the regular mainstream program IMHO). A refreshing alternative to the fodder for the masses that fills up our TV schedules.

If you get the chance to watch then do so - & who is The Stig[?]

Thanks for the tips! I've seen a couple of episodes on YouTube, but didn't know I could download them directly - thanks RJS.

I have Comcast, but the package we get doesn't include BBC America, even though the cable co breaks it off in me every month for over $100. I need to quit griping and get a dish.

What I've seen of different British media is very refreshing - not the dumbed down P.C. non offensive stuff playing here. Even if Hammond comes off half baked, at least he has the C.O. Jones to say it.

You can access recent BBC stuff - including TG on BBCiPlayer - just Google for it. Look in A to Z - under 'T' obviously!

I had tried tried to watch directly on the bbc website in the past, but it knew that I was not from the UK and would not work for me. I will try again when the new season starts.
