Water Pump

I'm new to all this cyber stuff, Also, new to the world of the Wedge.
I am a pround owner of a 1977 TR 7.. Maybe a nut for owning one. But am chomping on the bit for spring to arrive. After, spending $$$$$.. I have had a rebult engine put in and a rebulit water pump.. which appears to be creating a flood even at rest. The car has had less than 20km driven on her from the garage to my underground parking spot... The mechanic says it will take 1000kms for the water pump to seat and seal!!! is this true? I've already topped up the radiator overflow bottle once...about 2inches.. Do I believe the mechanic?? Or do I take it back to fix it! I notice the dripping and am at wits end after spending $$$$. HELP

Fivelles I've changed my water pump after rebuilding it and had it leak for a weak before it sealed up. Not sure if it's normal, I would think that they should seal up right away. Other guys can voice their experiences. By the way welcome to the forum and you'll be glad you signed on as everyone is always looking to help out anyway they can. By the way where are you located maybe if someone is near by they can drop by and give you a hand.

Hi Fivelles

Welcome to the best TR7 forum ever!!

I have rebuilt many TR7 engines and done countless water pumps, never had I had to "wait" for the pump to seal. My opinion is the pump should seal immediately and your mechanic needs to get this sorted for you.

It could simply be the 'O' ring on the inlet manifold just above the water pump that is causing the leak. They can be a real pig to get to seal correctly and the evidence can often look like the water pump is leaking.

Thanks everyone for your prompt response. I'll print these off, if I can and rub my mechanics nose in it. I've piad too much to be pushed aside!!! I'm located in Etobicoke Ontario 401 and Weston Road.

Look at that,fivelles.You been on here 5 mins,and you found a
friend to wreck your garden and upset your neighbors already!
Joking aside,thats the power of this 'friendly forum', all
ways some one to help out. When i did my head gasket recently
i did the pump too.No leaks,but as John C.says,the ringo between
the head and manifold needs care,i used a load of sealant there
which helps to keep it located while fitting manifold as well as
ensuring a water tight seal.
Good luck with your mechanic,if it comes to it.

For the few bucks it cost I replaced the pipe and o-rings while I was at it and also used a load of sealant-No leaks to date.
It's always good to see another Canuck on the board...Even if you do have a messy yard!

Hi guys.
This is amazing. I wish I found this site 12 months ago, I may have saved a lot of heart ache. I want to thank you all for your responses. I'd like you all to know I drove the yellow beast to the mechanic yesterday. He called the engine rebuilder and I drove it to the engine rebuilder, who says "It wasn't leaking when I sent it out!!!" It has less than 32kms on it, so its back in the shop....where it appears to live since I purchased it!!!! My money Pit!!!
My wife passed away August 06 in Nov 06. I bought my dream machine.... which appears to be an expensive go cart.. My wife has made sure I have no fun.... She's been looking down and giving me all kinds of grief...I'm going to write a book.. I fell and broke my arm on Dec 29th 06 would have been our 23rd Anniversary.... Out of commission till April 06. The car was in the shop Aug 07 to Dec 07... On Dec 9 07, I fell and they thought broke my leg, after 3 days with a cast.. not broken just torn a slew of stuff....the beast is back in the shop Jan 7 08.. The leg is mending as we speak... lets see what 08 brings.....Sorry had to tell the world... and as the newly voluunteered Executive Membership Chairman to the Toronto Triumph Car Club looking forward to an active driving season.... Please God.... Is there a patron saint for Triumph TR7 owners????

Good Idea... Goes with the wine noise on my machine!!! John had a look at you photos nice interior leather. I'll have to post some of mine. I was wondering John or anyone else, relating to the bumpers, any Ideas about removing stains,, short of painting which would be a sin... Should this be another topic??

Welcome fivelles. Maybe be your and jclays proclivity for bad luck has something to do with your mutual interest in photography? I got to stop taking so many pictures.[;)]

Sorry to hear about you having to sell your Fiat, jclay. Never a nice day having to sell a car you have time invested in. The wife mentioned the other day about getting a new car but I said I just brought them all (spitfires excepting) up to snuff in the past year to give trouble free motoring for the next 100,000 Km. why would I sell any of them? Don't like the way the new cars drive anyway and they all look the same.

Sorry for a slightly late reply, but did you machine the mating surface of the water pump impeller? Just finished mine, only need to put everything back together.
