ballast resistor question

Postby pfenlon » 06 Aug 2015 20:12

I'm removing the electronic module along with the distributor an Electronic Delco unit. Car is a federal spec import from the USA, a TR7.

I have fitted a standard distributor with points again a Delco unit, unfortunately my wiring loom doesn't have the ballast resistor cable,

so I need to fit a ballast resistor, in order not to burn out the coil, can anyone tell me where I can get one for the TR7, S and S in Bacup didn't have one, are they all the same

and could a motor factor supply one?

regards Peter.

Hi Pete,

Generic ballast resistors are available from classic car specialists, a google search should turn up one possibly local to you. Or Ebay

I run on the V8 such as the one pictured -

Hi Peter,
Good to see you yesterday. Give me a ring when you get a minute as I think I have found one for you.

Thanks to all for their help and suggestions, I did visit G E Middleton electrical specialists in Manchester first thing this morning, and they sorted out my problem.

I bought one of 1.3/1.5 Ohms and a new coil which when wired into the ballast resistor then coil Voltage is 6 volts.

after my original post yesterday I went on the net and found a ballast resistor for a TR7 which was a 16 ohm unit, so many choices, and for the uninformed a minefield.

thanks again.

So do you still have the benefit of the 12volt override when starting?.Steve...

Steve I haven't a clue what you are referring to. would you explain the "12v override?" please.
Fitted new resistor and coil.

12v white to one side of resistor
other side of resistor to + on coil
slate / grey and dizzy cable to -ve on coil

Hope this is OK.ImageImage

On the ballast system usually fitted there is 12volts applied to the coil during cranking to help provide a better spark. This is via a relay and associated wiring which bypasses the resistor wire which is part of the loom.If starting from scratch without this wiring already existing I would most likely just used a 12volt coil and wired accordingly.Just my opinion mind as a 6volt system has some merits.Steve..
