Postby Sautie » 09 Jun 2015 08:21

What are the physical dimensions of the correct sized battery for a TR7?

I don't know if there is a "correct sized" battery for a TR7 (or any other car). The battery manufacturers make a number of different sized batteries and their charts show one (some) that fit in the tray. You can usually find Triumph TR7 on those charts. You can measure the size of the tray and run down the sizes in a parts book if your auto parts store doesn't mind.

When I tried to get a battery for my Tercel station wagon the batteries suggested on the charts didn't fit. I measured the tray and got the biggest battery that would fit. You can do something similar for the 7 or just get the recommended one (there are two or more category sizes that will work). I did the later. Height is a concern as battery trays tend to be fairly high and you want it to fit under the bonnet. As there isn't a lot of draw on a TR7 the batteries are pretty small (as is the width of the battery tray).

If I recall correctly an 038 battery was fitted as original. This is often replaced by an 015 battery due to the slightly higher capacity. The approximate dimensions are:

L 23.8cm
W 13.5cm
H 20.0cm

There are probably higher capacity batteries that have different dimensions that will fit.

Always worth double checking any battery in a TR7 is not too high before you slam the bonnet and (although unlikely) that is not so big it is subject to excessive heat from the manifold.

In the US a 51 or 51R is what is called for.

Many thanks, My daughter bought a new battery, for her 7, giving in her old one and the new one is to wide and too high fouling the air intake.

That can happen (it happened with my Tercel wagon as I mentioned but although it is the same front clip to the sedan everything is different under the hood longitudinal engine rather than sideways.) Never saw a chart that wasn't right for the TR7 though. I wonder if they just miss read it or if the chart was actually wrong.
