Brownish backfire

Postby Johnluss » 21 Sep 2009 02:08

My Fergie had problems today. This morning going for a ride my friend noticed that on a few short period there was some brownish smoke coming out of the exhaust pipe. Later going downhill in a winding road, mostly on compression, there was a big backfire leaving behind a cloud of brownish smoke again. I am surprised the muffler is still in one piece. The rest of the day everything went smooth.
Pls all doctors tell me what is the problem with her.
Thanks

Is there an air pump installed and have you fixed any vacuum leaks lately?

The air pump can cause backfires when you let off the gas.

OK, I would look for an air leak around the exhaust header and do a compression check for a burnt valve.

Yep, air leaks into the exhaust will do it, so have a good look for
one.

So to will unburnt fuel in the exhaust, so do that compression test.
However, a riding, or near riding exhaust valve, will do the same
thing as a burnt valve, so check your valve clearances.

A mate of mine who had a 50s Morgan +4, [Vanguard/Fergie/TR 3
engine] used to refer to it as his Fergie in drag. Do you think of
your Fergie as your TR3, in drag? I'm sure it would endear you to
the side curtain brigade, if they were to hear you doing so.

Thanks for the tips and I will check that this weekend.
But what worries me most is for a french speaking like me is to understand the last part of your answer. Could you repeat that in plain english?

Don't worry John, he's Australian. We can't understand him on the west coast either.[:D]

As a Kiwi I understood it but I disagreed with it. [:D]

Sorry, it was just a joke, about having a Standard/Triumph engine,
basically the same as the TR2 to TR4, & the same one used in the
Morgan +4, in your tractor.

PS, Any success yet?

Still thinking of putting the later Fergie version of that engine (yes the petroleum/diesel one) in a TR2 or TR3.
Of course tegether with the mushroom shaped filter for the cranck case ventilation through the bonnet [:D]

Or a Fergie on Webers ...

I may be wrong but I think "Fergie" is John's name for his TR7 & not the iconic Massey-Fergusson tractor that had the TRiumph engines.

If you see the TR7 as a descendant from the old TR's it is also related to the iconic Fergie.
So quite an appropriate name I'd say [:D]

Fergie is the name I gave to my TR7 based on the royal Fergie, we all know I think, with the red head and the special charactar.
But thanks for all your suggestions. Planning to check that this weekend.
