Hi,
I uprated the brakes on my 7 well before my V8 conversion. I've never hidden the fact that the standard brakes and I never got on. I hated them.
I uprated the front and rear brakes with stuff bought from S & S back in the late 80's / early 90's. True guru's of our wedgeworld and I followed their advice that a bit of extra rear braking effort would be acheived by fitting the earlier 4 speed cylinders (it's a well accepted mod). The 2 pot Ford brakes are much more powerful AND progressive than the original fitment tat, so there's no issues of locking up the rear before the front. The MOT test would show this up and I've passed plenty of them since.
The 4 speed cylinders fit exactly as the 5 speed but a little hole is drilled in the backplate to take a differently placed locating pin.
IMHO the standard master cylinder wasn't designed to work with my larger capacity Ford calipers. There was far too much pedal travel even with braided hoses for my comfort but I solved this by fitting the uprated m/cylinder and servo offered by Rimmers at 20% off a couple of years ago. Why them? Well their special offer did it for me.
