The steering wheel I need is black, has three spokes with a 3 squares/rectangle design on each spoke and has a square in the centre.Mine is split on the seam on the right rear.Does this make sense? I also need an original 5 speed gearknob.I am not after concourse parts just useable.

Steph,

So you are looking for a early style steering wheel, which was fitted to speke / Canley cars.

If you were looking for a late solihull one, I have one in the garage. If you are interest in joining the TR Drivers club, I can send you an enquirey pack.

Jim

Wiring problems are almost certainly down to bad connections in the cable harness around the dash - I had to take the top section off my dash (not too difficult) , and carefully remove, clean, spray wd40 on the connectors - then refit them. No more problems.

Ah the fog is clearing.Curse Halfrauds!! I wondered why the fuse would'nt fit.As for the steering wheel the one on e-bay is the same as mine(except not raggy) and would be great thanks.Just one thing my car is a81 x plate is that the correct wheel then if there is a later type ? Anyone got a gearknob btw? Now my mind is going in all directions here and I just want to put this thought into the mix.How hard is it and or how expensive would it be to re wire the car/ replace the loom? It would be a garage job.Just thinking as all my niggles are electrical .I have looked under the front on a quick investigation re lights pop up and it is a mess of previous bodges. The side indicater/marker for instance looks like its wired with cable from a table lamp[:0].I also removed a wire that went no where from the front end with one end of this wire clamped to the live terminal of the battery. It seems overall that all the mechanical work has been done to my car.I have new brakes with new copper lines and handbrake cable, fresh welding in a tidy better than mot standard,NEw engine parts and a new stainless exhaust system. However It seems the last owner gave up at electrics. No wonder they roled over so quick on the asking price[;)].I still love this car have always wanted one and will make it good if I break the bank and all my nails[:X]

Steph, I think an '81 X should have the Solihull steering wheel with silver spokes (as my '81 W).

Hi Steph,
The thread on gear knobs is available in two sizes, up to chassis number 403722 had a small size thread (i think 8mm) and from 403723 it gained a couple of mm (10mm), the smaller is normaly easy to find the larger not as easy but still plenty out there.
If you email Simon up at Robsport he will bring both along i am sure, if no one on here has a spare. Will look myself tomorrow i am sure got early one somewhere.
Mine was the same as your as far as wiring, £1000's worth of receipts for body work ect but wiring done by a colour blind 3 year old with a fasination for scotch locks (those things should be band [:(!] ) and twisting wire together [xx(] rewired most it myself.
Hope to see you up at Stoneleigh,
Cheers John.

Its difficult to tell the type of steering wheel from the registration letter, a lot of Canley cars were stood for a while and registered a long time after they were built.

Been busy last few weeks so not being able to read all the posts hence my somewhat late reply. But great to see that you have found your TR7 DHC and a Sprint at that ... nice [8D] Hope you're going to enjoy it.

I'd go for John215 and bmcecosse's advice and check all connections and earth points and clean them thoroughly. If the loom is really that bad/butchered try S&S or Robsport maybe they can supply you with a good second hand one. Renewing isn’t difficult, just a lot of work as the dash needs to come out ...

Hopefully you won’t get to many problems with the rest of the car. Make sure you service it properly and regularly, so as suggested down load a workshop manual or get your hands on a Haynes manual.

Hi Steph,
Found a spare gear knob (small thread) if it fits yours, you are welcome to it.
Cheers John
