Here in the UK the standard alternator is relatively cheap and the parts to maintain them/rebuild them are readily available. But if someone wants to put a more powerful unit on for any reason then there shouldn't be any problems. If all is well with a car though and standard equipment only is in place then the standard alternator should give years of reliable service.
I used to have all sorts of lighting upgrades and nonsense on my car and I got through alternators regularly. Put it all back to standard and no more wearing out alternators. Probably a lesson for a lot of us there.
