OK, I know that you guys think I am crazy for asking you to supply photos shot in sunlight. Film is designed for 5500 degrees Kelvin. Sunlight is normally 5000 degrees Kelvin. Here is a Kelvin chart. Look at the temperature of the light in an overcast day.

Image

So, how much blue is added to a photo when you dump blue light into it? Remember that your brain compensates for the shift in color temperature that the eye perceives. Film does not. Neither does a digital camera unless you reset the white balance.

One of our members sent me a photo of his TR7, which I really do appreciate. Here is the original photo:

Image

As you can see, it was taken on an overcast day. I have to now try to color correct the photo and render the correct color of the car, which is Cavalry Blue.

Image

So, is this Cavalry Blue? I don't know, so I am asking you guys. Since we are trying to let people see the correct color, we have to be correct to begin with.

I like your idea Clay!! (but it is a hard thing to accomplish in a short period of time)

If there was more support, I' even think it should be added to this websites main page [;)]

btw, imho the side shots look better than 3/4 frontals

I have a ton of car show pics with tr7/8's, but never thought about taking side views of the cars, maybe we get together and document some of the cars + paint codes at the various shows this summer, and add to the list as the pics become available [;)][;)][;)]

While 90% of pro car shots are 3/4 that's beause you get a better feel for the cars shape from one picture. But, you may well be right that for the purposes of showing colour the side shot is better as you get less varying angles with varying shades of colours and that is what we should be going for. Good idea about it being a long term project were we can take shots of car shows we've been to although in my case there aren't that many TR7's in our cars shows and fewer still with original paint.

OK, I will slow down but don't you guys forget me.

This is not easy to do. I have to rebuild the color tables and add the photos.

I am not trying to hurt anyone's feels here. If this project cause anyone any heartburn, I will drop it like a hot coil!

hey a true colour representation is so difficult to achieve, just study the can tops of aerosol cans in a motor factors.

it will be very interesting to see the finished product clay, sadly my car is so many different shades i have no hope of finding any original paint to send you, but hope someone out there has.....

keep it going clay, your enthusiasm keeps us all on our toes...[:D]

I'd be happy to help but my car is Ford Radiant Red so that probably isn't much help!
