Sprint rally exhaust

Postby Bobbieslandy » 19 May 2010 23:35

Hi,

Soon i'll be in the position to put my engine back in, does anyone have any pics or info on the exhaust system used on the sprint rally cars? I have a stainless sports system which unfortunately isn't loud enough and is looking a little worse for wear! just wondering if it was a straight through system or if it did have silencers, where they were, what type and how many.

Cheers!

Rob.

Robbie.

If you are to use the car in competition you will need to refer to, and comply with the MSA 'Blue Book' rules for motor sport.
The section for noise tests for rally cars is under section 'R' for Rallying.
I have put an extract of it below.

4.1.1. This test must be conducted by an Environmental Scrutineer using a sound meter as prescribed in the Technical Regulations (J.5.17, G.10.1 to G.11.2).

4.1.2. Any car reading over 98dB(A) in this test will be prohibited from starting, (except in Special Stage Rallies where a level of 100dB(A) is Permitted) unless the SRs specify lower levels.

4.1.3. All measurements refer to the 0.5m test (J.5.16).

The link to all of the sections in the Blue Book is below

Do you have a company near you called 'Longlife Exhausts' as they would make a system up for you with whatever sound level you want?

I drove the 125 miles from North West London to Cardiff to have these guys build a stainless steel system on my 7V8.

It was well worth it.

Thanks guys, i'm not sure i could afford to pay someone to make one up though. I'll be making it myself, i'm after that crisp rasping noise that the 1970s rally cars made but i'm not sure about which diameter those exhaust were.

Mine had a crisp rasping noise that turned into a booming droning noise at motorway cruising speeds. It drove me nuts and I was glad when it finally rotted through.

Those guys in Cardiff are competitively priced but they also listen to what their customers want........It was cheaper than buying an off the peg s/s system for me and I don't have the skills to fabricate one.

now that's interesting, i assumed a custom one would of cost more. I think i'm going to have to get one fabricated now anyway, my 4 branch manifold is a larger diameter than my old stainless system and is also larger than the system that was supplied to me with the engine. I hate seeing reducers fitted to exhausts!

Thanks for the info, i wasn't even going to consider getting one fabbed up until now. Cheers!
