Vehicle ID

Postby greenmeanie69 » 18 May 2010 12:35

I’m trying to confirm the history of my Australian TR7 FHC that I have not long purchased, specifically the build factory. I have read that Speke was the build factory up until its closer in May 78 and then Canley started in Oct 78. I am slightly confused as the compliance plate is Jun 78 and the external decals are the Speke version and the previous owner is adamant that the car has not been changed as it was only on the road for 10 years before having the engine and gearbox removed for a project that never happened.

I can assure you that when I recovered this poor Wedge from outback Queensland it had been sitting for a very long time , faded paint , cobwebs, red dust and requires a complete restoration but NO RUST ! Structurally the shell and panels are in amazing condition. All parts are accounted for except the engine and gearbox and nearly all only need a cleanup.

It also has the canvas sunroof and original alloy wheels. If I told you what I payed you’d all probably cry.

Anyway my confusion comes from the knowledge that Speke cars only had the 4 basic fuse arrangement in the glove box were as the later Canley (which I previously owned) and Solihull cars have the 12 fuses. This Jun 78 version has the later arrangement as is the glove box decal and is original.............

The identification numbers are ACG35715 KF, this is on ID plates attached to the left hand front strut tower and T074859CG on the tag in the engine bay just behind the left light.

Any help would be appreciated.

From the plate that is a late build Speke car.

The last batch of cars by serial number were ACG 35001 to 37661 for UK, Europe & Australian markets, Aug 77 to May 78. The F part of the suffix indicates that a five speed box was fitted (so the back axle should be the later 5 speed type), but I have not seen the K suffix before so not sure what that means.

The later type fuse arrangement was in use by 1978 so that fits.

Hope this helps.

... that is the body number tag.
Nothing to do with the VIN, probably for manufacturing use only.

Thanks Guy's.

I suspected that it was a late Speke car but the confusion was over the fuses layout as I had recently read Bill Piggots “Original TR7 Restorers Guideâ€￾ and he points out that the 12 fuse layout was a Canley late 78 onwards car and not from the Speke factory.
Seems he’s incorrect then...........

My vehicle also has a third plate with the numbers 074296CG and also on the strut tower there is a 5 digit stamping 35715.
Amazing amount of numberings for one car !

Beans,

Love your car, I have spent a great deal of time studying the detail and am very impressed.

Thanks all,

The K on later models with the newer "VIN" plate stands for an Australian version so I guess the identification actually appeared earlier than people thought.

[Cheers]
