Bent Lower Link and Other Surprises

Postby Vegas_M » 22 Mar 2010 14:59

Hi all,

As part of my conversion to V8 power and big brakes, this past weekend I removed the original engine, tranny, suspension & sub-frame. I power washed it all to remove the grease and grime. Then I started to dismantle everything in prep for redoing it.

When I took apart was the strut assemblies, much to my surprise, the axle on the left strut is all hacked up. Looks like there was an outer wheel bearing failure at some point in the past. The bearing surfaces don't look too bad, mostly the taper that is hacked up. Tonite I will try to check it for trueness, although I'm not sure exactly how I can do that. Oh joy.

The next thing to dismantle was the subframe. The first indication that something might not be quite right, was when I removed the Steering assembly. The front left mounting bolt was all bent, as was the subframe tube it slides through. As well, the holes for the frame mount on that side were slightly deformed, with a dent from the mounting bolts hitting the front side edge of the holes. Looks like the subframe took a fairly strong hit at some time in the past. Guess I'd better check it for trueness tonite also..... More joy.

Finally I removed the lower links. The right side came out quite easily. The bolt in the left side was seized and I ended up cutting it out of the subframe and then drilling out the bushing. When I finally laid the two links side by side on the workbench, something didn't look quite right. The left link is bent. I haven't measured it yet (at that point I decided it was time for a beer and the couch), but it has a slight curve along it's length, maybe a 1/16 - 1/8" max deflection along the vertical axis, closest to the bushing end. There aren't any impact marks on the underside, so I'm wondering if it's just our traditional British Leyland quality control or if it might actually have been hit. This just keeps getting better. Thought anyone?

I'll try to post pics later tonite.

Martin

Typically I have found that it is the right side lower front control arm is slightly curved/bent. Maybe thats a standard thing to happen to LHD TR7s & 8s? I would replace the stub axle and lower control arm. The steering rack and subframe you will need to really look over. I have seen TR8s with bent frame rails that still were aligned and drove fine. I would say the front ends are pretty felxible and can be adjusted to go stright....as best can be! My personal TR8 had a bent lower control arm bolt, bent control arm, and bent steering rack bolts with no driving issues and was nice at 80-85mph.

Rimmer's currently has great prices on replacement strut/spindle units.

OK, went back out to the garage tonite and started measuring and taking pics.

First off the front strut....

another view of it...

Nice eh? Time for a new strut. [V]

The subframe doesn't look too bad. Doesn't seem to be too warped or bent out of shape, at least nothing that a few wacks from a hammer can't fix [8D]. Worst part is the underside of one of the mounting holes for the steering rack.

A bit of welding should fix it up. But nice Grade 8 bolt, eh! Must have been a hell of a wallop! The rest of the sub-frame is in surprisingly good condition after 30 years of Canadian roads and winters (Ever heard of salted roads, Billy?!) Typical dents and scratches underneath, but given the bent mounting hole and bolt for the steering rack, I was expecting much worse.

The bent lower link appears to have come from the factory that way. No marks or dents on it, at all. As well, the bend is more of a "sag". If it was hit, I'd have expected it to bend the other way. And horizontally it is straight, so who knows.

Next I measured the sag:

It has about 2.5mm maximum sag in it. Strange, because it looks worse than that in the first pic. Guess I will have to chalk it up to our traditional British Leyland quality control.....

Got lots of cleaning to do next.

I had the same stuff to my TR8 on the passenger side but it did not oval the hole in the subframe. I will say that has to be one of the worst bearing scoring I have seen.....new stub axle please!
