Wheel towing

Postby mb4tim » 15 Mar 2010 01:59

I'm moving soon and need to have mt MGB & TR7 towed up to the new house. I have access to a guy who can put the B on the flat bed and wheel tow the7 behind it.

My question, cam he tow the7 from the front wheels, rear wheels on the ground, with a 5-speed? It's about 80 miles of interstate.

Thanks!!

You can damage the transmission flat towing a 7 that far. Why can't you flat tow the MGB? If have to flat tow the 7 you must drop the prop shaft before doing so.

You either need to take out the drive shaft, or keep the back wheels off the ground for the trip. Something to do with the oil pump in the transmission does not work when towed, and the transmission will be ruined.

As above, disconnect the propshaft on a 5 speed car. Unless the engine is driving the gearbox the oil pump inside lies dormant and you could damage the box, as per the factory manual. A few miles under 30mph in an emergency is about the limit.

The MGB is on a spit, towing would make tooo many sparks.

I towed mine backwards about that far with no trouble. Tie the steering wheel so the front wheels stay straight and you'll be ok. Might not be legal in some locales.

Towing that far on the front wheels I would wonder how close the air dam is to the ground with the rear wheels up and any bumps may damage it. Drive shaft is easy to remove and no big deal if there's no dolly for rear wheels. Just mark it front and rear so you get it back in same way. A few swipes with a dremel cutting blade to mark the mating surfaces.

I am serious about driving it. By the time you figure out towing, rent dolly or trailer, go get it, take it back, load the car, unload it, figure out lights, trailer hitch, etc. you might as well just make another trip.

Dan - I would drive it that far if I had the time and $$$ right now to get the front end aligned and 4 new tires.

Spyder - what front air dam? ;)

Silver7 - the guy towing it is the guy I'm buying the house from - it's a favor, I don't think he has rear wheel dollies.

I'll see if I can get a buddies big flat trailer that I used to get it here. Or, do the U-Haul thing. The B will fit in the van, and the 7 can go on a trailer.

My B once looked like that Tim. Looks to be a nice tub.
Here it is now.

Jim, that's with the new steel already in. The bad stuff was easy to spot before it went to the media blaster on Neville Island.
