It really does pay to get a 2nd quote.....

Postby Debpazvin » 08 Mar 2010 20:57

In these "credit crunch" times I try and save money wherever possible and I was really pleased at my latest bargain. When I had my car trailered home the other week following the dead battery episode, the half-wit recovery man reversed the car down & caught my stainless steel exhaust on the road, bending it slightly. Apparently it was too close to the road anyway as a bracket had come off. But, I took it to a local exhaust place who advised that as it was not the stock exhaust there was no way I could order one. They would have to make one up and then bend the exhaust back. Nothing to it he said but at a price of £40. I said "leave it with me" and went to another tyre & exhaust place who my mechanic recommended. The guy there was real happy to see the car saying he hadn't worked on a TR7 for about 8 years. Right, he says, let's get it on the rack (or whatever it's called) and "let's have a laugh & count the holes". I had the last laugh when he looked in amazement & stated that it was "solid as a rock". He then had a scout around for a bit of metal exhaust fitting and proceded to fit it and then bend the exhaust back with the heated thing (blow torch???) Anyway, this took about 15 minutes all together. He brought it down and it looked fab. How much I asked....oh just give us a fiver! So it isn't always "rip-off Britain" and I left all smiles! Debs x

I can figure out most to the real English colloquialisms, but this one got me!

I had to look in up:
bal•a•cla•va
noun
a close-fitting garment covering the whole head and neck except for parts of the face, typically made of wool.

OK, Now I am really confused. How does that help with getting a discount?

Had you said cleavage, I would have understood!

jclay...it was a JOKE! I wore neither a short skirt nor a balaclava, but it was supposed to be funny! I think in England the comedians call it self-depreciation. Self-deprecating humor is humor which relies on the observation of something negative about the person delivering it. Many comedians use self-deprecating humor to avoid seeming arrogant or pompous, and to help the audience identify with them. In this way, its use could be seen as an application of the rhetorical concept of ethos. So, now, you see....[:D]Debs x

A balaclava is used to hide the face. Useful if you intend to rob someone, bomb a pub or disguise the fact you have neurofibromatosis. Hopefully not required in this case!

Darn! Where did I put that Dictionary!!??

I didn't understand 1/2 of your reply, but I did get the feeling that you think I stepped over the line. That was not my intention. I use a more direct humor.

Sorry for any squashed toes!

Wow, talk about a bunch of people separated by a common language.

Jclay has no idea, You & Peter are covering the face, to look
better, [in Oz, you would use a paper bag for that], & I thought the
balaclava was to go with a hand gun, to hold the bloke up, to force
the price down.

Just confirms what I always thought, Kiwi's really just poms in drag.

I wonder what our europeans thought you meant, or does that change
depending on country?

Don't bring up the drag thing all over again. It was once and the sheep has forgiven me. [:I]

So what does it really mean?

Deb is really gonna be on my case now for getting off topic. (Kinda like that Pink skirt thing!)[:)]

We call it a ski mask here in the states... balaclava is a type of pastry isn't [:D] That would make me give someone a better deal.
Good the hear someone cut a deal for you it makes you want to do something nice for someone else in return. What a great world it would be if eveyone did the same.

No Clay, that aint it! A <insert noun here> in drag is to say that despite all the effort that has gone into making something look attractive it is still aomething you don't want to take home underneath. For example, a Porsche 911 is a VW Beetle in drag. Its also a sneaky, yet lovable, Australian tactic of insulting 2 peoples at once. [:)]

Clay, I'm going to recomend you go to Amazon.com & buy the box sets of The Professionals, Only Fools & Horses and Are you Being Served. It"s about time you had a proper education. [:D]
