The job I didn't want

Postby FI Spyder » 22 Mar 2009 05:19

OK, it's no Coca Cola car, no Premium Special Edition, just a plain TCT that I don't have room or time for , but I only paid $100 plus a Ryobi scroll saw my wife no longer uses. Yes I know it's over a hundred times trobbie paid but there's no rust and less than 47,000 km (less than 30,000 miles to our american friends.) The second owner (got it off his mother-in-law) got tired of prepping it for paint and couldn't sell it. The colour was Tumerick Yellow but I don't like lighter yellow so a colour change is in order. Inca is too close to construction yellow, red and blue cars too common so I think I'm going with Poseidon Metalic Green one of two metallic colours available in '79. It has to be a '79 colour to get Collector status (my current plate lets me drive it with no extra cost for plates and insurance). The plan is too remove engine/trans and strip out everything for check and rebuild (the car is 30 years old). It will need door cards and top and more trim.

Look ma, it's twins[:)]

And I still have to build my deck this spring [:0]

For a local car (British Columbia) there is little rust. The requsite surface rust on battery tray and engine mount.

Image

The only other rust is in the spare wheel well (so far) where it perforated at the leading edge.

I'm planning on fabricating the front corner as it is a shame to replace wheel tray and rear bolk head for just the corner.

Oh, yah. I'll quit giving Beans the gears for his rust perforated California car now.[:I]

Nice find! Surface rust is one thing, holes another. Being solid and low miles...I would have given 200! [:D]
Best of luck with it.
PS: Given the work involved to do one from bare metal up, I personally would paint it the color YOU like.

Slow progress. I've gotten a spare wheel well from Shaun to weld in. I've got the interior and dash out, bonnet and trunk lid off. Here you can see the hole in B Post I have to weld in a dime sized piece.

Image

Here's a shot of the interior. The rust looking colour you see is brown glue that held in the carpet. Some of the edges have surface rust on them.

I'm currently working on putting 240 volt subpanel in for air compressor and welder as well as the old wall oven is going down to the garage for powder coating jobs. I've got other house wiring to do as well. There's always something.

Can't have you dying of boredom. Good to see any progress when it comes to the wedge. Do you plan to keep it?

Never say die. At least not while you're still breathing.

No, I need another DHC like I need a hole in the head. A TR8 coupe would be nice though.[:)]

I could only justify it by saying I'll fix it up then ask a large sum and periodically drive it till it sells.[:D]
