If I may make a suggestion. The next time you feel like pulling the sending unit from the gas tank, try replacing the float with the cork from a wine bottle. See if that makes a difference in the wanderings of the gauge needle.
Back in the old days before the use of so much plastic, cork floats were commonly used by the manufacturers. One thing for sure, corks are far more resistant to degradation than plastic in modern fuels.
Not to mention, that cork will be a free left over from the bottle.
