Carpeting

Postby Milanoverde » 19 Oct 2009 23:09

I know I need to replace the carpeting in my 1980 convertible. I am a little frustrated by my choices and the inability to get any information from our favorite parts suppliers..
1) Called Victoria British. They first told me they didn't send samples, then as I was about to hang up told me to hold on then says he was told they could indeed accomodate me. 3 days later, I get a phone call that they could not!
2) Tried Moss Motors. I emailed them and they e mailed me back that they would go in the mail that day. 3 days later, I get an e mail that they didn't send out samples.
Each of these fine vendors to list severel different types of carpeting in their catalogs.

I don't know how anyone can make an intelligent decision based just on the info in their catalogs. Seems ridiculous. I canted a company in New Jersey that advertises on E bay. I had the samples in 2 days, no problem.

That was my rant!

Now for 2 constructive questions:

1) Does anyone still have the "formed" carpeting for our cars? Are we stuck with piecing it together?
2) Any other thoughts on a supplier? I am in the USA. I have bought from Rimmers in the past but I just figured it eould not make sense to go across the pond for carpeting.

Any advice appreciated.

Hi, Tony -

There's been talk about formed carpet, but thus far no action.

I bought my set from The Roadster Factory. They are excellent about sending swatches out, and the quality is very good. When I received my set, the B-pillar pieces they sent were for the coupe (mine's a convertible), and they sent the correct pieces out, even though many months had passed since I had places the order. Here's a link to their catalog page:

Thought I had a better picture, but maybe this will give you an idea of the fit and quality:

Mickey

The same thing happened to me with The Roadster Factory carpet set. They sent me the B pillar pieces for the coupe. Eventually they sent the correct pieces which I never installed.

One word of warning: If your wool carpet gets wet occasionally, then your car smells like a wet dog for a week after each water episode.

My car still has the original moulded carpet. It's in good condition, however it is badly faded. Is it possible to get these carpets successfully re-coloured? If so does anyone know of a company in the south of England who does this type of thing?

<font size="2"> Guess it's an easy mixup; I used the correct ones, as the others were way too short.

I bought the nylon pile set. Very good quality, and the color was what I wanted.

I have an idea on carpet re colouring. If you wash it with a wet and dry hoover like a vax but use a fabric dye instead of the soap it may work.Or even pull the carpet set out and soak it in the dye by tipping bukets of mix on it and working in.If your carpets are a bit tiredand you maybe need anew set whats the worst that can happen?I have not tried it but the theroy is there. The 'dylon' fabric dyes work on clothes.Fabric is fabric.....isn't it? Mind you my husband struggles with whites and coloured on wash day[:o)].

I bought a "formed" carpet, from one of the usual Triumph suppliers
in Oz, about 6 or 7 years ago. I assumed it was imported at the time.

Unfortunately, it fitted well, at the back, but was about 2.5" too
narrow, at the front.

I stripped out my spares car, I tried it in there, & found that the
error was in the centre, over the transmition hump. When I cut it up
the centre from the hand brake forward, it fitted beautifully. The
cut is all covered by console, & dash stuff, so didn't matter.
Strangely, the cut to shape hessian underfelt stuff, fitted perfectly.

It still looks the same as the day it was fitted, after about 55,000
Km. Even the loose mats I ordered with it look as new. Sorry I can't
tell you who made it, but fitted carpet is available, somewhere.

My original carpets were still in good shape, just basically colour burnt to a brown hue on the upper exposed areas, one of my paint suppliers gave me a aerosol can of SEM carpet dye to try out, and honestly it turned out pretty good, and actually has prolonged the life of my carpets now for about a good 5 years.

Dyeing carpets is very DYI, all I did was pulled the seats and some misc trims bits, and then simply masked the rest. Liberally sprayed the dye in small sections, and worked it into the fibers with a old scrub brush (like the one's you would find in the wife's bathroom cleaning supplies) let it dry over night and then scrubbed the carpet one more time to make things soft, the reassembled the interior.
After a few weeks and some mild vacuuming the carpets looked factory.

Ron.
