Just a quick one, how comes you can paint over rust directly with hammerite, but have to use rust treating with other products?

Thats what it says and it indeed does have a rust inhibuter within it's make up but compared to say a three coat system or POR it's not all that effective.. IMHO [8D]

[8 whole cylinders worth of punch to ram the world through the windshield and out the rear view mirror. Car & Driver]

Paints that go directly over rust work by 'encapsulating' the rust. The rust will always be there, but by sealing out the moisture won't get any worse (thats the theory). Where normal paints aren't so good at 'sealing' out the moisture, allowing the rust to advance.

Hammerite is not that great I am sorry to say[B)].It is a quick fix and fails as quick.I have tried it in numerous colours on all things from motorbikes to cars to the rusty bits on my fridge door and it will rust back through in a month or so[xx(].It is cheaper less hassle and a better job long term to use a better product.Not related at all but If it helps though I have found normal car body spray paint in any colour you fancy is great for plastic dashboards and trim.[;)]

Ive used it on most cars ive had at some point, for specific areas, for just a little added protection rather than putting it direct to rust and never had a problem, as yet anyway[:)]

Hammerite is ok for top coating good metal yes but as a paint on to rust remedy it is as much use as a chocolate fireguard[:D].

Ok Steph point taken, im just giving you the expererince ive had over the years with it too, but then again my car never see any kind of bad weather so perhaps that why it works better for me [:D]

Hey steve.long time no type[:X].Sorry to be on my high horse about the hammerite thing[;)].I am sat at the computer in my hotel killing time till my flight home from our holidays at 4.30 uk time.Had to be out of the room at 12 and it,s raining so net it is[:(].This hotel computer is hard work, the punctuation keys are set out oddley and it is so old it has stained glass windows! I will be back bothering you with my TR woes soon.Happy motoring[8D]

I have had a go at degreasing my engine bay as my next door neighbour had some ,gunk, for fathers day and said he would never use it.I sprayed it on and rinsed not TA DA ! shiney but a good start.We are in maderia for our holidays and it is monsoon season I think! been pouring since wednesday.First week was very nice so can,t complain and still bloomin hot so good ole blighty in autum sounds good now.I did not know of a november show where and when? would love to go but bet that is the day my team get all their ducks in a row and we change my gearbox at last.[:0].c u soon x

Forget the Hammerite Phil - it certainly cannot(with any success) be painted over rust! You need to eliminate rust by absarion (wire brush or grit product) - and then treat it with a Rust Killer - most of which use phosphoric acid - then apply sealer coats. Of course - this can only work with surface rust - if it's coming through from the other side -it needs cutting out and new metal welding in!

Hi,
I have used hammerite smooth black on my cleaned up suspension parts of my spitfire, it looked good to start with and lasted a couple of years but soon after that the rust was back through almost as bad as before. Next time i will try POR I think.

Steph, ive using Auto Glym Engine degreaser, its quite good along with elbow grease lol, the dates for the classic car show i believe are 13,14, & 15th of November ive been last 3 years now and enjoyed it, highlight for me was not only seeing some fantastic looking cars but also meeting Mike Brewer & Edd China.
