Jim, I'm very glad you decided to replace those tyres. I have been
debating with myself, about stucking my 2 bobs worth in, but now I
don't have to resist.
I had some mint, but 11 year old Bridgestones on the back of my 7. I
loved them. The rubber had hardened as it aged, so they had much
less grip, than the new tyres on the front. With this combination I
could actually power slide the 7, & the thing was great fun.
Then I found myself cruising down a new, very smooth highway, in the
wet. Twice, while just trundling along at traffic speed, with little
throttle, the rear end just came round on me. The first time I
thought oil perhaps, but when it happened again, with no other cars
having any problems, I thought tyres.
My tyre bloke confirmed that there had been a number of big crashes,
on that road, in the wet, being attributed to old tyres, which have
lost their grip. They are not suitable for the very smooth road,
when wet.
With the rough country roads, where I live, no problem, but some of
these beaut new materials they use on main roads today, require good
rubber when wet.
With new tyres, I can no longer power slide the 7, [power? 7?], & I
do miss my bit of fun, but I just may stay on the road.
