My led back light conversion wort's and all

Postby stevie_a » 18 Jul 2009 16:51

(Part 1)

At Billing i showed off some of my handy work to a selected few

but as it is still work in progress I didn't put it up here

I am now not far from complete

I will show you what i have been up to

well it all started off I wanted a very subtle look to the back

I removed the orange cover from the indicators

put in a direct replacement bulbs but it was not a good success too dull

so i started to look at other ways to do it

After many months I found a place that could supply me with full led boards

Amber , Red , white

Image

I got a spare set of back lights and set about them

Put them in a mill and cut them down

Image

Image

Image

This will let the light go strait out

Image

I set about putting a back onto them using

Image

and

Image

At this stage I hold up my hands and say to the people who use this stuff

I salute you as it is a nightmare to use

As you see from my first attempt

Image

After i finished it back on the mill

Image

and infill with resin

Image

Pop in some holes

Image

and cut to fit cards

Image

Image

Put on some thin foam back

Image

Image

Insert the boards

Image

I then put some aluminum paper to give some kind of reflective properties

Image

some rough wiring

Great story Stevie! But I feel you should have incorporated the Fog Warning lights in there too! I've just done that - using double filament bulb holders - and the car is much nicer without the ghastly hanging down aftermarket lights at the rear. It passed MOT without comment. If they could do a section of RED lEDs with some WHITE ones inbetween - on separate circuits - then the original reversing light spaces could be both RED Fog Warning and WHITE Rev Light! Are you going to reveal the supplier of the LED boards ???

Hi,
Saw Stevie's LED conversion at Billing in the dark and is very very impressive, rear lights that a following driver can actually see and reverse lights that are brighter than standard headlamps!! Great saftey aspect!! As well as the red with clear below looks a lot cleaner as well IMHO not to mention interior lighting he has also done and of course LED very litle current draw [:)]
BMCECOSSE i know where those boards came from [:p] but if i told you then would have to kill you as Stevie would kill me but safe to say very clever source, OMG have i said to much already [xx(]
Cheers John

Steve,
Nice mod. What flasher unit did you fit to make the indicators flash at correct speed?

Just remember it is illegal to have a fog light within 100mm of a brake light. You may have passed the MOT but????? (you are illegal)

As said the led boards are from a cleaver source

they are from one of these

Image

the red boards are twin brightness but as i will explain later i was having problems

with the brightness match from each side

I have heard and been warned about the 100mm law

but I hope to resolve the problem, But i was looking at the after market

rear fog lights and discovered a surprising fact that they are positive earth

so you can't just put in a direct replacement led bulb

I will be showing more later with photos.

OK this is what I had in It was a Halfords electronic flasher unit all you do is ad an earth to make it work

Image

I put in this when I fitted the led's to the back and front of the car

Image

As you see NO earth (yes i know [:o)] it is now insulated

Image

for the hazard lights i had to put in a resistor

I got that from maplin this was it put in one of the lives at the rear lights you can see it as a white block

Thanks Steve,Great help.
Managed to take my rear lights off and remove the orange insert and respray the body in "chrome" silver, fit new gaskets and of course orange LED indicators. I already have the double stop/tail mod done with LED bulbs.

Yes - I know Construction and Use Regs require 100 mm - but that's not to say mine are now 'illegal'. Just means Triumph couldn't produce them like that - surely they must have made a mess of the rear light design at the time - to not have the fog lights incorporated! MOT man doesn't care about C&U regs - he just wants to see RED lights - and I will never have them switched on anyway - except to pass MOT each year!
I rather suspect the LED lights conversion may be 'illegal' too - since they are not EU approved! But - who's going to bother - it does look a great conversion - although straight swop LED 'bulbs' are readily available - and are EU approved.

The only problem with those are that led lights are only effective when viewed from strait on

And as we know the TR7's bulbs all go in from the side

That is what started me on this in the first place
