I guess I'm in jclay's camp - 1951 for me. I've owned MGs for 35 contiuous years and like jclay said - I know how they work. From 1955 MGAs to 1980 MGBs they're all pretty much the same once you strip off the smog junk. I've always loved 'em along with Triumphs, Sunbeams, Jags, Minis - i just love the british cars that I grew up with. I saw my TR7 last year on Craig's List here locally. I had forgotten all about the Wedge. At $650 for a rust free, FI model with straight panels what's not to love (lust?)? I think any animosity between the marks is baloney. Personally I get pretty excited seeing any british iron going down the road (saw a nice TR3 on Saturday). Jim

Having to lay on your back under the front of the MG while someone else turns the distributor, just to set the timing properly! Ridiculous!

I was actually shopping for an MGBGT when I ended up with my TR7. I never should have put that last bid on the 7...lol.

But, 8is floundered on evilBay again, so I'll keep it a while. Just to stay in the good graces of good company.

Rich, you had better make sure you have good locks on the door to
that Magnette, if ever I get to Canada. I would really love that.

Hasbeen,
If you ever get to Canada get in touch and we can take the magnette to the pub for a pint or two. I can probably get my mate Larry to come along with his +4

Cheers,
Rich

BTW: My first car was a (brand new) MGB, and I have owned many MGs over the years so I am biased. My TR7 is the first TR I have owned, although I have worked on just about every TR variant back in the day. I never really cared for the styling of the non-wedge TRs, but I do have to admit that the TR6 sounds glorious when you put your foot in it.

I think in most cases the rivalry between the Triumph and MG is a pretty friendly rivalry.

In many cases "traditional" triumph owners think less of wedges than other British owners like MGs think of wedges.

At the last British car show I went to in Phoenix (I live about 50 miles away), I saw a nice MG magnette, and then I realized that I knew the owners from my town (and church actually). It's funny where you find other British car enthusiasts.

That's a real coincidence Rob!
I'm sure that's the only Magnette in your town, they are even more thin on the ground than Tr7s.

Rich

I'll wave at any old car (except Marinas) but a bit of rivalry is part of the fun whether it is Triumph v MG or Ford v GM. As a Triumph fan I think of reasons that they make better cars than MG but the bottomline is an old car is better than a new car. Some of my best friends drive MGs & that's fine as long as they park them down the street a bit. [:D]

jclay-

I did find this neat little item (I guess you could make one yourself) for viewing the timing from the top of an Midget/Sprite:

Growing up, I always thought Triumphs were prettier (thanks to the sweeping lines on the older models), but after owning the Sprite, I have gained some respect for the A-series engines. I still think the MGBs are rather plain looking, but an MGB GT is actually quite cool looking to me.

That sounds like a pretty good offer to me Rich. I'll be sure to
take you up, if I do get across the Pacific.

Hasbeen.

Sorry for the delay.

In my day of working on Sprites and MGBs, you had to static time them. My best friend, J, always timed them with a timing light and by ear. I convinced him to help me static time his with his help. He was amazed at the difference. The static timing marks were on the bottom of the timing chain housing.
