Power vs Altitude

Postby nick » 15 Jul 2009 19:45

I've got my 1979 US spec 7 running pretty well. It has almost none of the original anti polution gagets. Other than that it is stock. I live in an area where we are at 4500 ft. So if the car came with 90 hp from the factory I have only 76 hp available. Maybe a little more since I don't have the air pump and the other crap. The other day I hit 95 mph. How much more could I get at sea level?

hard to tell , because it depends on much more factors , like temperature, humidity and so on....

if you where to go to a local dynometer, their measurement whould be at your elevation and a conversion to a SAE proscribed test , that is sea level, 20 degrees C ( or 0 not realy shure).

just ask the dyno operator to measure with and without the correction factors, than you will be able to compare what would the factory declare as the engine power and what you get at home ( near to home )

76HP?! That's not a lot.

Have you still got the original carbs fitted? I believe strombergs tend to run rich if they are not in good order & the thinner air will cause a carb to run even richer so get them checked & lean them out if you want more power. It will mean that trips down to sea level will make the mixture too lean but if you want self adjusting then convert to EFI.

As an aside, with the Weber/Edelbrock fitted to my V8 I can set the jets then just change the tapered (stepped, really) rods that modulate the jet size by moving in & out of the jets according to the vacuum. To access them you just need to remove the air filter & they can be changed in 2 mins. I use bigger rods to lean it out for touring & thinner rods for performance. Much more intelligent design than the Holley or the Stroms.

The 76 hp comes from converting 90 hp at sea level to 4500 ft on this web site: http://www.slowgt.com/Calc2.htm#BasAltCal

I have had mine to 100 mph without pushing it. Still had more to go.

Better than an a 1961 AH Sprite, 70 going downhill with a tail wind!
