Thinking of buying TR7/8

Hi guys.Just registered on here, as i,m thinking of buying a 79 TR7/8. At present i,ve got Supra 3.0 twin turbo ( manicly fast ). The car i,m looking at is for sale in Bristol. Its in met poseidon green , and its advertised on various sites eg Classic and car, at a price of Â£5995. Can anyone give me a little advice ???? Thanks Tim

Get it inspected by someone who knows wedges. I bought my Poseidon Green "8" without even driving it after getting it inspected by someone I trust. Like almost all old cars, the body is more critical than the mechanical stuff. I've been very happy with mine so far. It's way quicker than my TR6, although it might not seem so fast to you!

Thanks Ken. In the ad it states that it had a floor up restoration in 2007, with new wheels, new soft top , and is described as how it would look when it came out of the factory. The pics look like that last statement might be true !! Tim

It's a buyers market at the moment with the 'credit crunch' - - and cars with V8 engines are not exactly popular either with fuel at Â£1 per litre. I would say - bargain the price down - way down ! And of course - get a full years MOT and Tax included - and a full tank of petrol!

Looks like someone has tried to recreate a 'real' TR8 looking at the carbs air boxes ect and cert spent some money on her. Just because someone spends 10k on a car dont put 10k on the value, if only [;)] ,advert been viewed a few times. Worth a look but unless very very clean 6k only IMHO is steep, offer him silly money and wait!
BUT do buy one, you wont regret it, well most of the time you wont [:o)]

It looks like a lovely car & as John observed it a lot of effort has gone into making it look ex-factory & so this is not a car you would tinker with & spoil that "genuine" look. I'm sure many of us would love a TR7 that didn't need tinkering but the rest of us just can't help ourselves. Since there are plenty of much cheaper wedges around that would love a bit of improvement I'd decide which camp you are in before buying this car.

Welcome to the forum. Peter's dead on. I paid $4,000 for my Spider and another $3,000 in parts to bring a good car up to snuff while still having original paint, top, and carpet. Having more time than money (or brains according to my wife) I also bought a rust free (except for two small spots) 79' DHC for $100 with only 30,000 miles. Mind you it needs to be disassembled and painted to complete what PO started. For 6K BP you should get a pretty immaculate car at todays prices. Depends which end of the spectrum you are looking at.

In todays market you should be able to haggle if owner is serious about selling. Good luck.

I am new to the Tr7 and my advice echos whats been said.The body is more important than mech stuff as welding costs!! It is rare to find a jump in and drive so just check everything works and check in combinations.ie lights and heater work at the same time etc.Also though this looks a very nice car it does seem a little high on the price.Barter and check thouroughly and be prepared to walk there will be others.I bought in haste and have repented at lesuire.I still got a great fun car but could have got a better one.

Hi, I agree with the above comments especially the ones about the bodywork and the carbs.

Like a lot of other purchases, it might pay to look at several examples instead of buying the first one you see.

Many thanks to all you guys for taking time to reply. Ive just got off the phone to the seller and he asures me the car is immaculate, and runs as it had just left the factory. I,ll be going to see it am Sat. I,m taking a mate to check all is as should be , then on his approval may do a deal but this is ,nt set in stone, so come Sat ........... once again guys thanks and i,ll be in touch wether i buy or not. Yep, mine was a pig with the stock strombergs and exhaust. I fixed all that though. [;)]

Glad to hear you have someone knowlegeable to take along. All too often I see cars people went out & bought that should have stayed where they were. Just managed to rid myself of the MGB from hell[xx(] that a lady bought without consulting me first. She keeps asking me what she should do with it. I told her if she would have bought me a case of beer, I would have gone with her and we wouldn't be having this discussion.[:D]
