Rear caliper (no parking brake needed) suggestion?

Postby tipo158 » 12 Jul 2009 20:34

I am looking for suggestions for an inexpensive, readily-available brake caliper/rotor set-up that I can use on the rear brakes on my TR7 rally car. Since the car will have a hydraulic hand brake (a second master cylinder tapped into the rear brakes circuit), the caliper does not need mechanical hand brake bits.

It does need to fit in a 13" wheel, not be too expensive and be available in the US.

wilwood?

but you will need to tinker a bit to set it up on the axle. good thing is that they have all the mounting documentation on their site. you can get a set of blank rotor hats and then get them drilled to wheel bolt pattern.

wide range of brake pad compounds and discs.

but on the other hand you dont brake with your rear brakes...
low brake performance is usualy due to front brakes.

You will need two of these spacers after you remove the axle and rear drum mounting/backing plate-

Then here is a bracket to hold the caliper that will need to be machined-

Calipers are from a 1989 Ford Tarus SHO-

The parts you will need for one side less the final brake lines-

Here it is installed and it fits all aftermarket 13" and larger rims. The rotor is from a 1989 Ford Tempo? It also gives you an option to add a e-brake cable.

Thanks for the suggestion.

I know about the SHO brake suggestion, however, I was really hoping for a suggestion without a parking brake mechanism. It is "one more thing" that can go wrong and usually complicates changing the pads.

As far as "you dont brake with your rear brakes", remember that I am building a rally car. In rally, you often take very tight turns (such as acute junctions) at speed. There is a move called a handbrake turn where you lock up the rear wheels and this causes the car to want to swap ends. This is very helpful for getting around these tight turns quickly. And you need brakes capable of locking up the rear wheels to do this.

As far as Wilwood, which one? Most brake set-ups that I see these days are for big wheels and will not fit inside a 13" rim.

Would something like line-lock that is used on front brakes in drag cars work? You could perhaps set up the hand brake lever to activate the line lock.
Just a suggestion...

The cheapest way out is to use a TR8 front caliper and rotor for the rear with mounting the rotor inboard of the rear hub and seeing what you have for clearances.

Is the TR8 front caliper generally available in the US?

Is there a brake caliper similar to 4-pot Austin Princess caliper, but is so available that it is inexpensive in the US?

The TR8 Caliper is available used in the US from a few TR8 specialists. Typically everything (British) with the possible exception of Jagaur was a standard 2 pot/piston caliper.
