marker lights

Postby nofinchance » 28 Jun 2009 21:52

I have the red rear and amber front corner markers. The front ambers are working as indicater side repeaters.I would like it better if they worked with the lights ie lights on red and amber corners on.Is there any MOT reason why I can't do this? I notice some volvos have amber corners on all the time so is it OK legaly? hey some lead others follow only 25 yrs behind mr volvo[;)]

Hi Steph,
As a MOT tester, these lights would not be a testable item IF they came on with the side lights, as you say Volvo's do it and if you look at BMW E60 (new shape 5 series) they have a row of orange LED's that exstend to side above the headlight.
The only danger is Mr or Mrs Numbnuts , mistaking an orange light when viewed from the side as a faulty indictor and pulling out in front of you, never under estimate how STTTTTTTTTOOOOOOOPPPPPPPPPIIIIDDDDDDDDD people are!!!
So bring it to me and i wont fail 'Bag Puss' [;)]
Cheers John

I have these lights installed - but not connected as yet, because I am still debating how to wire them! Not sure if red lights to the side are allowed in UK. If you wire the front ambers one wire to the indicator, and the other to the side light - then they will still work as repeaters when the side lights are OFF - and will come ON with the side lights, and flash OFF when the indicators flash ON ! If you follow ??

It had crossed my mind about the confusion a false indication may cause[B)].I did see in the rimmers book there are two types of amber corner light with one bulb or two so they will work as both light and turn indcator.I have the single bulb so If I put the live wire from the sidelight and the indicator together will that work as both or just cause a fire [:0].I kinda like the idea of looking like I am cruising route 66 even if it's just the A36 in the drizzle so may just have them as lights if the 'hobby nazis' those community support officers in 4x4 s (the traffic enforcement officer) doesn't mind.[:D].

totally illigal i'm sure but you can wire these up to bith side lights and indicators they will flash or indicate out of sinc with the indicators though...

as a rule i have these wired with the side lights this has always been debatable as years ago they would fail it for this and thats why most cars are wired with indicators only

i just disconnect them when they go in for the MOT wahhhh [:D]

I have the amber ones fitted (and active with the side/parking lights) both front and rear - just as the Volvos sold in EUrope. Checked with the DMV and it's legal nowadays since it's a part of the EU package - so should be OK in the UK as well...

Steph,
You refered to the Rimmers book showing a double bulb sidelight/ indicator think you will find the double one fits in the front bumper, it's not a side cruise light.

The cruise lights I saw had a one bulb type and the usa version two bulb type giving a indicator and cruise light.I have wired mine as cruise lights and it looks rather nice[:D]

OK how about this variation... what if you wire the side marker lights directly to the parking lights, but bring the hot feed wire through the NC (normally closed) contacts on a relay whose coil is wired to the turn signal?

Then the side markers would be on all the time the parking lights were on, except when the turn signal was flashing, they would flash also. And they would be the opposite of the turn signal - when the turn signal was on, the side marker would be off. I bet that would be easy to see!

The downside is that you would need a relay for each side of the car. You could get by with 2 relays if you wired the front and back side markers together, but that would require running a wire along the entire length of the car. Otherwise you would need 4 relays.

Tony now you are getting technical [:)].Sounds like a plan though. And Weddgie perrin was correct. I have checked the book and the double bulb lamps are the front sidelight /indicaters sorry weddgie. It is a bit confusing as they are on the samepage and listed as usa cruise lights??? still when was dealing with rimmers ever easy[:D]

I've had marker lights for over 20 years and wouldn't be without them, especially in night and town driving. Our front indicators are in the bumper and hidden from the side........

The rear ones are red and wired into the sidelights. The front ones are amber and wired into the indicators. All nice and conventional so UK drivers aren't surprised and the MOT man is kept happy every year.
