I understand the frustration you are going through.

Don't any of you guys live near Steph? If a whole flock of TR7s show up with Steph the day the guy opens his shop, maybe she could get are car back and no charge. Bring signs on sticks and walk all the way around the block so his whole neighborhood will know the kind of business he runs.

Nothing like a show of <s>force</s> <i>unity</i> to get things accomplished.

I beg your pardon, the TR7 is a terrible car only because of incompetent garage mechanics like him! I say again, the only Mr/Ms Goodwrench one can trust is the one who sleeps on your pillow at night.

What on earth was the £500 going to be for ?? Tracing an oil light etc which he hasn't done anyway!!!!Don't pay another penny! Get Trading Standards on the job right away. And tell him to leave the car alone. I changed my petrol tank single handed in my drive in a day - and that included painting the new one and letting it (more or less!) dry while I grabbed a sandwich for lunch. It's not a difficult job. And be sure to publicise all this on the Triumph forums - with name etc to save others being 'done' by this cowboy.

Oil light stuck on is probably a faulty oil pressure switch(nine times out of ten). Or maybe the wire (one wire) has shorted to earth.
I think the headlamps earth out on the chassis behind the headlamps where the horn bolts are located (under bonnet). If this area is corroded you will have a bad earth and no headlamp motor, or bulb working. May need all earth points cleaning.

Nothing about this adds up. Sounds to me like you need to stop trying to deal with this yourself & get an independant, or even better, a biased expert to intercede & get this sorted.

I have put the time line of problems in the letter and have to wait the 14 days now.In a nutshell here is the list.Day 1 asked for a new fuel tank.Put out the oil light .fix a leak on the top hose and get an mot as he told me he was a mot centre.3 weeks later nothing done as he was concernd about the cost and payment so £250 was given.4th week car fails mot for front subframe and steering joints,intermittant rear light and headlights not raising(this is when the real trouble started as I had just had the electrics sorted at this stage the 'specialist was blaming the electrical shop for dodgy work)5th week the car was promised for the weekend.Car not ready excuse waiting for parts also told me new headlight motor was needed and the bills climing.6th week car still not ready headlights won't work and he has taken out the old tank and put it back with new straps and lines after putting in two tins of frosts tank sealer.7th week car not re moted as the tester has gone on holiday.I said that I was told he was the mot centre and found out the guy he uses is known to be dodgy.'specialist' goes postal saying that the mot guy is a personal friend and we have a row about the lights and so on also now the fuel sender has packed in.I suspect he has poured in the sealer and gummed it he still blames my electrical garage who I have upset by also blaming.The specialist says that it's no good telling him that things were working when the car arrived as lights have to work on mot day and they didnt.8th week the bill is now £865 the car is still not ready as the tank leaks and he will now fit the new tank only another £150.Also he can't mend the ligts so has left them raised can't mend the oil light either the pressure sender is new and engine oil pressure good he says.and not ment water leak.I will have to tape that I'm told.We argue again and then (quote) apologies to mildred not my feelings or words "TR7s are terrible cars it's not my fault the electrics won't function no wires match the haynes manual I don't realy know the 7 I took this work as a favour I only work on heralds and stags realy.9th week car promised as is with new tank front subframe,and steering joints.All dash lights on now,lights fixed up and fuel gauge not working.I go to collect and ta da closed for two weeks holiday.Sorry to bore you all with this just at my wits end.Anyone in the midlands uk pm me and I will tell you who this numptee is.STAW AWAY! What a tale of woe [:(] Makes my blood boil [:(!]. Unfortunatley not a lot you can 'legaly' do fast with these things they take time.
What a load of BULLSH1T3 about the wiring BL always used the same colours for the same job across the range be it a Mini or a SD1, ie blue and white headlamp, brown and white oil pressure light and on and on!! If i get made redundant or loose my job going to set myself up as a BL specalist and do a bl88dy better job than this clown [:o)]
Hang in there Stef, in the mean time if you need a fix of TR's get up to the TRDC national at Billing (you dont have to turn up in one), we will buy you a drink to drown your sorrows!

I feel the same as you John, these cars are very easy to work on, if I was 30 years younger I would start a business repairing Triumphs. Also if the work is done properly they are extremely reliable.

i really feel for ya i have had my share of numpty's with my TR7
the original guy who was going to spray it said the same thing "I don't usually work on old cars and i'm doing it as a favour........"
i pulled it out as soon as i could.
and then there was this guy who owned the garage where it was involved in that fire it turned out he was using my car as a barging tool with his landlord.
and don't get me started on the first garage it was there 2 1/2 years for work that should have taken a month or two tops.....

still when you get your car back and on the road and you have your first drive you can drive past that garage "flick the "Vs" honk the horn and flash your lights"........and show them there are people out there who know what they are doing,

and theres nothing like that first drive i still remember mine 4 years or so after i got it no hood on the car raining freezing cold in november big cheesy grin on my face it was only a three minuite drive from the mot garage but i think i'm still smiling from it every time i get in the drivers seat[:D]

you'll get there in the end it is frustrating but you'll get there........good luck.....

Sad sad tale of incompetence. Is the garage really all locked up - 'mechanic' (term used loosely) away on holiday - or was this just a story to make you go away ? Check again on Monday ! I still think you should go to Trading Standards - and check at Citizens Advice too. I suspect he will now hold your car until you pay the bill - be careful in case he also now starts charging a 'storage fee' !!
