New sender new gauge still NO READING

I have put in a new fuel gauge and replaced the sender unit in the tank.I am still getting no reading on the gauge.Both senders work the gauge if you plug them in outside the tank and move the float with your hand.Neither will operate the gauge once fitted.The wires are on correctly. I did reverse them and that sends the gauge to full.Any ideas I am havibg a seriuos paddy here[:(!] All morning and all I have achieved is a 'eue de petrol' the new fragrance for the girl about town[xx(]

Oh dear, I felt sure your problem was with the sender.

You will excuse this perhaps stupid question but have you put some fuel back in the tank after draining it? No fuel = no reading[:I]

Yep put 10ltrs in.The book says the tank holds 55 ish ltrs so is ten not enough for a reading? I can't understand why both senders will work until you fit them into the tank?[:(!].I need a cigarette to calm down.BOOM PROBLEM SOLVED[:D]

I don't know if it's any help but the gauge in my car works but doesn't read correctly. Only goes to 3/4 when filled and will read empty when it still has fuel. Perhaps you have the same situation and having only about 1/5 of a tank isn't raising the float. Can you adjust by bending the float arm a bit?

Hi,

I reused my old sender unit when I replaced the tank and had the same problem. I put in a gallon of fuel and the gauge didn't pick itself up at all. I thought I'd screwed up.

It was enough for a few miles though so I went down the road and put in 5 gallons of Tesco's finest unleaded and all was well. My sender unit doesn't register 1 gallon on its own but apart from that it's fine. I reckon it gives me a little insurance from running out.

thankyou all for your help.It was a case of the first 15 ltrs not being enough to lift the float.The old sender has some fuel inside the float so must be a hole in it thats why they both work outside but the original will not work inside as the float don't float.Hurray I have repaired something[:D], with your help[:X]

Couldnt ya hook up the wires to the sending unit <i>before</i> installing the sending unit into the tank, then manually move the float up and down to check accuracy or at least operation of the fuel gauge?? Thats what I intend to do before I fasten the sending unit in the fuel tank.[:)]

If you reverse the green/orange wire with the green/black you could be getting an error. The green/orange wire goes through a delay circuit and then to the low fuel light. If reversed, you would be getting no signal from the sender unless the tank was very low, and then it would be with a delay.

The needle is self steadying. Something wrong with your gage. The delay circuit is to stop the low fuel light from flashing on and off when the fuel gets down to that level and the fuel slosses around in the tank.

Mine doesnt work either. New sender went in last year before I put the 7 into winter store, but didnt fix the problem. Ironically, the low fuel light on the dash still comes on so it doesnt bother me too much.

Another on the list of "little" jobs to do [:D]

My fuel gauge does the same thing: fuel gauge reads 3/4 when full and empty when it still has fuel in the tank. I have a new sending unit but fitting it and fixing the gauge is low on the "to do" list right now.

Driving the car is #1...[:D]

Any gauge reading that isn't right may be the result of corroded connections or broken wires (wires are multistrand) within the insulation as this results in a raise in resistance from normal and as a gauges reading is a result of resistance (hopefully only that of the sender). If insulation is worn and the wire is shorting out the same thing applies only in the opposite direction. Compound this by the possibility of PO incorrectly modifying the wiring and you can have a foresnics job to trace it down that would challenge any CSI show. You take it one step at a time, with patience and a sharp eye and a multimeter.

Or you could have a bad/maladjusted gauge/sender.

Hard to believe vocational students did that job, huh? 17 and 18 year olds.
I'll post another pic now that the 30th Anniversary stripes are on it. Well, as soon as I get it out of the shop. We waxed and buffed it today [:D] Ye olde tin worm has discovered the car and a large section of the trunk had to be replaced (new steel welded in). But it is done and just a few things to reassemble before it comes out.
